Paul and Horford to NJ

Trade ID# 5661221

Atlanta Trade Breakdown
Incoming Players: Devin Harris, Courtney Lee, Emeka Okafor
Outgoing Players: Jamal Crawford, Al Horford, Maurice Evans
ATL trades away two guys that are already posturing for hefty paydays next summer, and adds a PG and C that are locked into reasonable deals. Craw is a nice luxury off the bench, but the Hawks would be unwise to invest 8-figure annual salary into their franchise player's backup. Horford also needs a big extension, and would like to play PF full-time. Okafor is a moderate downgrade, but is comfortable being THE full-time C, and will be more affordable than Al after this season.
Harris, Johnson, Williams, Smith, Okafor
Bibby, Jo. Crawford, Lee, Powell, Pachulia

New Jersey Trade Breakdown
Incoming Players: Al Horford, Maurice Evans, Chris Paul
Outgoing Players: Devin Harris, Derrick Favors, Courtney Lee, '11 NJN 1st, '12 GSW 1st
NJN goes into win-now mode. Horford would be given a rich extension soon after the trade, and the Nets would go into the season with a young, elite core and an athletic supporting cast.
Paul, Morrow, Outlaw, Horford, Lopez
Farmar, Williams, James, Humphries, Petro

New Orleans Trade Breakdown
Incoming Players: Jamal Crawford, Derrick Favors, '11 NJN 1st, '12 GSW 1st
Outgoing Players: Chris Paul, Emeka Okafor
NOH slashes payroll and "nets" a bigman with huge upside.
Collison, Ja. Crawford, Stojakovic, West, Favors
Thornton, Pondexter, Posey, Brackins, Gray

Predictably awful for everyone except New Jersey.

I'm not sure if the Hawks do this one. IMO Okafor isn't a great defender at C, and a frontcourt of Williams/Smith/Okafor will still get dominated by teams with elite big men. Harris would be nice, but you have to wonder if he would be a good fit on the Hawks, next to Joe Johnson who is just as ball-dominant.

Though I'm sure they'd like this trade if you somehow substitute Josh Smith instead of Horford.

Yeah, I thought about Smith instead. For the Nets, he has a trade kicker, which would take his contract from unsavory to downright overpaid. For the Hawks, Josh is a homegrown product and fan favorite, who, while overpaid, at least isn't looking looking for a deal as large as Horford will command if he hits the market as an RFA next summer.

Isn't Devin "better enough" than Crawford to make up for the Horford-Okafor discrepancy? Isn't the Lee-Evans exchange (necessary from a monetary perspective btw) also a positive? If not, what else would need to be added?

OK, so send the GSW 1st to ATL, and NOH can have the '11 and '13 1st from NJ. I haven't heard much about the trade being bad for the Hornets, so I'm concentrating on improving the offer for ATL. Does that work better for everyone? If it's not enough or you see another solution, please offer it instead of just saying no. I don't think anyone has argued the fit for Atlanta, just the value, which is not a terribly difficult matter to adjust.

Horford is worth more than Harris, even given Al's contract status. (Remember that Horford's value is probably at its peak, while Harris'...isn't.)

Okafor's contract is not viewed as a positive...not even sure if he has the value of a productive expiring, like Crawford.

Lee-Evans isn't even close to enough value to offset the above. This is a dream come true for the Nets.

The deal is still pretty bad for New Orleans too. I think that's being overlooked here.

No, because Crawford is a better enough fit than Devin to make up for the Harris-Crawford discrepancy

I thought after reading the title that the OP probably wouldn't have Lopez included in the trade even though the nets would be getting Paul and Horford. Opening the thread confirmed that assumption.

It depends on if Paul wants to go or not.

If Paul wants out, Favors, 2 good picks and cap relief is hardly a bad deal IMO.

But ATM, Paul supposebly wants to stay so it's crap lol

If this trade happened how good would the Nets '11 pick be?

nj would have to take posey too... making the money work on this trade when all the nets are fa signings and can't be moved 'til december is tough. you'd really have to add a fourth team. btw, forget NJ getting horford AND paul. maybe jsmoove and paul, or even more likely d. west and paul, but not horford and paul. for example this would work:

NO gets Young, Speights, Crawford, Humphries, Favors... gives Paul, Okafor, Posey, West
PHI gets JSmith... gives Young, Speights, Kapono
ATL gets Okafor, Kapono, Harris... gives JSmith and Crawford
NJ gets Paul, Posey, West... gives Humphries, Favors, Harris

plus picks would have to be thrown in there... this is probably not the best example, and paul is not going to be moved anyway, but this deal WOULD work monetarily.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head.
