Cleveland and LA (Gasol to Cleveland)

Post#1 » by DowJones » Sat Feb 23, 2013 4:13 am

Cleveland Trades
-TPE
-Remove the right to swap picks with that Cleveland currently has
-A future 2nd

Cleveland Gets
-Pau Gasol

Why for Cleveland
-Cleveland is going to be in an interesting situation in 2014. Do you tank for a 4th straight year or try to become competitive while keeping salary cap space for 2014 (i.e. LeBron). Cleveland may be better off going the competitive route. If that is the choice, Gasol really helps. Varejao/Gasol/Irving/Thompson/Waiters/Top-5 pick makes for a really interesting team.

Why for LA
-They save a massive amount of money while getting a large TPE that they can use to their advantage. They also keep their amnesty, which they could use on someone like Artest. That would allow them to keep Clark and not worry.

Think Lakers have a better chance of getting something of value with Gasol than the TPE. Good use of the TPE requires a little fortune and luck. Idea isnt' bad.

Makes absolutely no sense for either team.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

Too good for Lakers

Kupchak is a patient guy. He'll wait until teams have struck out on free agent big men with their cap space.

The Lakers cant remove the pick swap obligation because the pick goes to the Suns if it's in the lottery.

Interesting. What might LAL do with a large TPE? Well....if they had some low $ but good value talent (they don't) it could be big,or if they had picks (they don't). So...with a TPE basically they can trade nothing for a guy who is ...overpaid somewhat. I guess LAL is cooking up their agenda for the end of the 2014 season when a ton of guys expire. The Cavs? they would love to have LeBron return. It's a narrow window but maybe they can have LeBron cap space...then use Bird rights to sign Pau? Depending on Pau being good in his mid 30's...that might work out. LAL...however...wants to try for another + season before Kobe and Nash are finished. The want to hang onto Dwight. Pau? They'd LOVE to get youth + picks but who does that?
CENSORED... No comment.

I agree with this. Could be HOU, TOR, or CLE. Mitch will get something small in addition to the TPE, probably one or two guys on rookie deals.

Sure, if the Lakers amnesty Gasol... the Cavs will make a bid for him.

If HOU can't get Howard, they are happy with Asik. They will pursue Smith, but not for max.
