DET - SAS

Monroe/Jerebko/Singler/Middleton

for

Leonard/Green/Bonner

I know many DET fans will hate this due to giving up Monroe just as SAS fans will hate giving up Kawhi.

Pistons

Upside: Better balance and floor spacing plus one less year of Jerebko v Green. The defense would look even better IMO as the fit seems conducive to strengths and weaknesses.

Downside: They lose depth at the C position and would have to rely on Kravstov as the only back up there.

Spurs

Upside: They get a big man that should fit great next to Duncan and eventually be his replacement when he retires. They get depth back at SG/SF plus a couple of young players on great contracts.

Downside: They get weaker at SF and get one more year of salary from Jerebko v Green.

Personally, I think it makes sense for both teams...and expect both fan bases to reject it lol

Biggest problem Spurs fans are going to have is that especially after giving Splitter big money is that Leonard is worth more to their team than Monroe would be and has an extra year before he has to get paid.

Going beyond that Green is worth more than the filler from Detroit alone and while Bonner is mostly worthless he has a niche in SA so dumping him adds almost no value for them.

Detroit would need to add more value to convince SAS to give up two big parts of a team that came that close to winning a title next year.

Haha, SA fan, Danny Green is worth more then Jerebko/Singler/Middleton, come now. Greg Monroe is the most valuable piece in this proposal, Green isn't that great, Middleton/Singler each probably have more value then Green. If anybody has to add a sweetener it would be SA, you can keep Bonner.

First Im a Mavs fan so about as far away from being a Spurs fan as you can be. You can argue Monroe vs Leonard I suppose but no neutral fan is going to think any of those other guys are worth more than Danny Green.

SA's top-2 SF's were Leonard and Green. This leaves a massive hole for them.

Monroe also hasn't shown the defensive competence to really help a title-contending team right now. In the short run this is a major step back for SA, and their good enough to care about the short run.

SAS problem against the Heat (besides Parker's disappearance) was the lack of an athletic 4. Monroe doesn't help that.

I think the Spurs would want Splitter+Green for Monroe+some decent role playing wing. But I doubt that works for Detroit.

Overall, this is two teams both trying to win now... which is usually not a good pairing for a trade.

What?

Jerebko is stretch 4 with a questionable 3pt shot and questionable defensive abilities. He's probably a negative value, not an asset.

Middleton is worth a future 2nd and nothing more. There are probably a lot of teams that wouldn't give you that for him.

Singler is a decent role-playing SF on a good contract, but he's already 25, and he's not getting any better than "decent role-player". That's hardly a great asset.

Green, on the other hand, is a great asset. He is a plus defender at 3 positions and he's a very good 3pt shooter. He's getting paid almost half as much as guys like Reddick, but he's twice as good.

It shocks me that Leonard has this type of value. Both he and Green are solid role players, but Monroe has an offensive game that is becoming rarer and rare in today's NBA. If I'm Detroit and I'm moving Monroe, I'm looking for a legitimate star caliber/potential breakout candidate at that position.

The Spurs are a very good team because they consistently find pieces that fit into exactly what they're doing. I question whether Leonard is that potential breakout candidate. He's very good with the 3 and D role, but I'm not sure he's ready for much more than that. Green fits the very same mold although Leonard has more upside. I'd want more for a young guy who's already showing the type of upside that Monroe has.

That's the first time I remember hearing someone call Jerebko a stretch four. He's a hustle and energy guy, rebounding and defense are his things.

Middleton has one of the most beautiful shooting strokes in the league. He's got potential to be a valuable role player.

Singler is what he is, which is another useful bench contributor.

All that being said, I can easily see why SA would say no to this deal.

kawhi+green > monroe. taking on jerebko's contract doesn't make much sense then.

You can say Ray Allen scoring a clutch three was mainly the cause.. Spurs were so so closed.. Not the time to make so many changes as trading Kawhi..

"Hustle" and "energy" are usually code words for "garbage time player that is getting real minutes". If Jerebko is a great defensive player then I'm just wrong. If that's the case he has value, but I haven't seen it.

Middleton has "the most beautiful stroke"? Maybe... but if you care about it going in, he's not your guy. He shot under 30% in the NBA and NBDL last year. Is college numbers were OK, but nothing to suggest he's an elite shooter.

This is the Pistons dream trade..

Knight-Green-Kawhi-Smith-Drummond

That team is set.

Unfortunately the Spurs
1. Won't destroy their chances of another Tim Duncan era championship
2. Won't trade away 2 players from the best defensive line up to add a 7th big man and create a big hole of swingmen.
3. Kawhi has more value to both the Spurs and Pistons. Why? Fit. He is the perfect fit for both teams, while Monroe fits neither. I'll be nice and pretend Monroe has Kawhi's upside.
4. Danny Green, that guy who just set the nba finals record for 3s is more than a throw in.

Spurs decline.

Value is close. Having to pay Monroe a year early is a big deal and they likely aren't getting a good SF for Splitter.

Monroe doesn't make a ton of sense for SA given his looming payday, the money SA just shelled out for Tiago, and the simple fact that Tim Duncan is the ageless wonder.

I love Kawhi Leonard, and Green would be a perfect fit, but I think both teams ultimately decline, though SA does it faster than Detroit.

Would love to get Leonard. No interest in Green.

I am not sure if SAS would really want Monroe, however.

Not only that but Monroe doesn't do anything defensively, so he's FAR from TD's replacement and likely not a player made for Pop's system. Sure, he's an excellent fit offensively, but his defense leaves a LOT to be desired IMO. Still, I agree that the value is close and SA has to at least consider it.
