Depends on the protections, but if they are reasonable for the Wolves I like it for both. Payne doesn't really fit what the Hawks are doing and this gets them an asset down the road. Wolves add a guy who could be useful to them.

Wow. Flip's handing 1st round picks pretty liberally. First Thad and now Payne.

Hmm hope that pick has good protection. Looks like Thad Young will be gone by the 19th.

And meanwhile they have Bennett at pf also. It has to mean one of Thad or Bennett goes by the trade deadline, right?

And for Atlanta, they have to use the pick to bolster the wing rotation for this years miracle run, right?

almost like that guy in Cleveland, huh?

Essentially this deal is simply moving the asset forward. Payne is probably a similar level prospect to whomever they would get with that pick except they don't have to wait 3 years to benefit. 1st round picks get so overrated both here and by actual GM's.

I agree, as long as the pick has decent protections it would be a good deal for the Wolves.

The Hawks are sending rookie Adreian Payne to the Timberwolves for a 2017 lottery-protected first round pick.

Payne will be 30 by the time the Twolves are competing.

I actually don't think that is hyperbole (although it sounds like it).

He will be 25 by the trade deadline, was a guy that did nothing in college until he was 23-24 playing against kids 5 years younger than him, and has stunk in the dleague this year -- http://www.basketball-reference.com/nbd ... ad01d.html

Guys already that old the projections for are generally awful, and with that bad of a start? oh boy. The pick could be top 20 protected for 3 years and then 1 second rounder, and I think Minnesota just overpayed by crimping its flexibility.

Minnesota has the potential to be one of the most fun teams to watch the next several years, and I think this sucks for them long term and does nothing short term.

I'd have thought it's a *bit* soon for Atlanta to give up on Payne, especially with Millsap about to hit FA in the summer, but the value of the trade seems okay if this is what they want to do.

Not to nitpick but he's 23 right now. Turns 24 next week.

I believe he turns 24 later this month.

Oh wow. I did a 1991 birthdate already meant 24, then gave him an extra year in a week. My bad.

Okay, edit all my years back there by 1, and have Minnesota not competing until he is 29? I hate this trade for Minnesota and I love all their youth, as they have some of the best upside in the league. =(

In any case, I like it for the Wolves, but I'm a big Adreian Payne fan. Loved watching him play when he was at Michigan State.

As long as the pick protections are reasonable it is unlikely that they would get someone batter than Payne with that pick anyway, so, like TexasChuck said, it's pretty much just bringing the asset forward a few years for the Wolves. The hope obviously would be that by the time that pick is conveyed the Wolves are competing for playoff spots so that it lands in the 15-22 range anyway.

Yeah, I don't think this is a bad deal. Minnesota doesn't expect to be a lottery team in 2017. I think they're right to have great expectations. That being said, I haven't been too impressed with Payne, but he hasn't had much opportunity.

The problem, at least to me, is that you're moving the asset forward a few years but into non-competitive years. It's one thing if you're talking about developing the centerpiece of your future like Wiggins but Payne is probably at best a future role player.

I don't know but I can't help but compare it to the Sixers getting for absolutely nothing the year after he was drafted 25th.

Even with lotto-protection, Minny shouldn't even consider trading away 1st round picks. That's not where the team is right now.

And it's not like Payne looks to be much of a prospect. As noted, he's a very old rookie - and while Atlanta's depth explains his lack of NBA minutes he should at least look like he's too good for the D-League to be considered interesting at his age.

Payne's probably as good or better than Bennett, but there are D-Leaguers available for 10-day contracts that also are.

Its not bad, but the age issue is a small thing to me as well. He was an older guy in the draft, Dieng was similar. Like both players, but they are both a good bit older than what I'd prefer for a rebuild.

Also there should be a poll, preferably with a lot of "Payne" puns.

I don't understand why everyone is so concerned about his age. In fact, Minny might well see some added maturity as a positive. I think the Wolves have been clear that they were never looking to completely bottom out. They have Wiggins and whomever they pick this year to be the high end players on the roster--plus in 2016 they can supplement the roster with FA and they have plenty of other talented young players.

I don't understand why a team that hasn't made the playoffs in over a decade and only won a playoff series in one year of their entire existence should keep making moves that ensure they stay young and terrible. Don't make dumb moves and trade for 33 year old guys, but adding a young big who fits their needs isn't that crazy.
