Nick Friedell of ESPN just tweeted "Bulls announce that they have fired Tom Thibodeau". (Sorry, I can't embed the tweet; if some other mod would like to, please feel free.)

Guess they just wanted to end the drama, and I can see the benefit of that.

Guesses where he ends up? What kind of contract do you think he'll get?

Is Fred Hoiberg a lock for his replacement in Chicago (has it already been arranged?)? Or do you see another coach ending up there?

I'm glad they decided not to hold him hostage any longer--hope Thibs didn't have to give up any money to get them to come to their senses on this. I'm not a huge fan of how the Bulls FO does business in general, but credit to them here for finally just letting him move on.

I'd think Hoiberg is their guy, but with Flip rumored to be leaving the bench I'd think they'd pursue The Mayor hard as well. I wouldn't mind seeing JVG get this job if he doesn't get the Pelicans job. He's also a defensive-minded coach and that would make for an easier transition without needed big roster turnover.

If the Magic are sold on Skiles(Meh) then I don't see a current opening that makes sense for Thibs.

Good for Thib.

Escape, vacation, put your feet up. Unrealistic expectations and with the players not supporting you with that "management/player" end of year meeting they can kiss your you know what.

I don't think he does anything but relax and collect his money in peace, nor should he.

Enjoy some margaritas or whatever you like, he will have options to come back later, and should be selective later.

Is this the firing that Sheridan was talking about in his tweet?

Surely not right? I mean everyone and their mother saw this coming.

Guess I spoke too soon trying to give the Bulls FO a little credit: calling him out in the press release is just so petty. If I were an in demand coach no way would I consider working for a Reinsdorf-owned team. Just no need for it.

Yeah. I can't imagine that playing hard ball and trying to hold Thibodeau hostage would have done any positives for the Bulls in any future hiring of coaches, or even in dealings with agents for players. Certainly would have made them come off as petty.

Players should take notice of this as well.

It's adding up.

Seems "power" struggles and public castration attempts on the coach are hip in town, while "delicate" handling of the players is the norm. Let them walk too if it starts getting expensive.

Jerry Reinsdorf wrote:"The Chicago Bulls have a history of achieving great success on and off the court," Bulls chairman Jerry Reinsdorf said in a statement. "These accomplishments have been possible because of an organizational culture where input from all parts of the organization has been welcomed and valued, there has been a willingness to participate in a free flow of information, and there have been clear and consistent goals. While the head of each department of the organization must be free to make final decisions regarding his department, there must be free and open interdepartmental discussion and consideration of everyone's ideas and opinions. These internal discussions must not be considered an invasion of turf, and must remain private. Teams that consistently perform at the highest levels are able to come together and be unified across the organization-staff, players, coaches, management and ownership. When everyone is on the same page, trust develops and teams can grow and succeed together.

"Unfortunately, there has been a departure from this culture. To ensure that the Chicago Bulls can continue to grow and succeed, we have decided that a change in the head coaching position is required. Days like today are difficult, but necessary for us to achieve our goals and fulfill our commitments to our fans. I appreciate the contributions that Tom Thibodeau made to the Bulls organization. I have always respected his love of the game and wish him well in the future."

edit: bold for emphasis in quote purely mine

Wow. Really? Is this a transparent attempt by the Bulls FO to spin all those reports that came out late in the year of the FO meddling in the coaching staff, and even attempting to spy on them? Insane.

And in other news, we are looking for qualified individuals for a job opening...

I don't like the way this was handled at all. The only thing that could have made it worse is if they actually waited it out to screw him like the reports said they might.

Pretty sure I saw a report about an offset clause in his contract though, which means the Bulls have an interest in him getting paid highly by someone else next year, no matter how much they may not want him to get a good job, they probably don't want to pay him more.

But as others have said, pure pettiness. I can't imagine orgs and coaches around the league view this as anything but.

He should just take a year off and collect all that money from the Bulls. Hurrah for "offset language."

this did same thing to Del Negro (leaking the shouting match between pax and vdn), they'll just hire another under radar type of coach so they can punk him like they did with thibs

He should get revenge by taking the Magic coaching job for a dollar a year for the 1st 2 years and $9M a year for the 3rd and 4th year

I think it's the other way around- I think a team fires a coach that nobody saw coming, and replaces him with Thibs. I feel sorry for that team's best wing defender.
