Simple Suns/Nets trade -- Apologize if this has been done

Thad Young

for

Brandon Knight

Suns need a PF and with the value where they pick in the draft, moving out a guard makes sense.

Nets need a perimeter player who can generate some offense and Knight can do that.

Interesting....

Probably would say yes as a Nets fan even though it leaves a major hole at PF (though we have one at PG now) and I don't think Knight is much of a PG. I'm guessing Phoenix would want more, but there's not much more for BK to add.

Not sure what PF would be a realistic target after this.
H.Barnes - though GS can match unless it's an absurd deal
M.Williams - Think CHA keeps him
D.Williams - was last year a fluke?
R.Anderson - Will be in high demand with a big price tag
T.Jones - meh
Sullinger - not sure I like the pairing with Brook
J.Hill - I'd take
Horford - I wish

I like it but the Suns FO would have to accept the concept of sunken costs to pull the trigger.

They do need a PF and they do have an excess of PGs.

Bledsoe / Goodwin
Booker / Jenkins
Tucker / Warren
Young / Leuer / (Mirza)
Chandler / Len
+
#4

Is more balanced and they still have plenty of cap space.

Agreed. But they gave up that Lakers pick to get Knight, paid him a bunch of money, and there's a psychological impact that skews perceived value when you've already overpaid for something.

I'd do it. I know quite a few Suns fans are not particularly high on Young, though there are more who are not particularly high on Knight. But simply for roster balance it makes perfect sense.

I think Brooklyn needs to add. Not sure how. Would a Bojan Bogdanovic for ____ swap make it work?

If by July 15 the Suns have not been able to find a better use for Knight as part of a trade package I would be fine with the move. I don't think McDonough would be willing to do that, however.

If Knight helps the Suns acquire a young talent like Okafor, a top 8 pick, or an all star caliber player as part of a larger package, McD is able to rationalize moving the Lakers pick to acquire Knight in the first place. If Knight is moved for a player like Young I feel like he would be admitting his mistake and I don't believe he is ready to do that.

I think most smart front offices can just move past that sort of thing.

My bigger concern is how Young fits with Len/Chandler. Not much spacing there. But if the cost is just Knight, it might make sense.

I do wonder if Marks wants to make his first big acquisition Brandon Knight though.

There are no draft picks involved. The trade can wait until the end of F.A.

I actually like Thad Young, but not at the cost of Knight in a 1 for 1. His ability to score the ball is highly valued by the FO. If we could figure out how to get RHJ included, then we would have something to look at.

It makes sense but I'm convinced the Suns mgmt wants 2 starting quality pgs... I don't I think they see it as a problem at all.

I think Brooklyn needs to add too, but don't see how that works, so my counter would be a package smaller pieces for Young. Archie Goodwin + John Jenkins + pick #13 or a future pick, or something like that.

That would give the Suns everything we seem to want out of the summer: reduces the number of guards on the team (and thus making it easier to draft best player available at #4 if we think it's Murray or Hield or Dunn), brings in a good player on a good contract at our position of greatest need, and just generally consolidates our assets.

For the Nets, Jenkins is a decent young guy on a super cheap contract, Goodwin is a pretty exciting and extremely athletic player who could break out on a team that chose to feature him, and they just need to get back into the draft in general. The pick could maybe even be a package of multiple lower picks / heavily protected picks.

Any thoughts on whether something like that would be workable?

I agree with this. But part of my thinking is that unless Bender falls to them at #4 all the draft value is at guard. So I'd rather have my choice of the guards + Thad then reaching for a PF/Jaylen Brown and keeping Knight.

Suns GM will want more for Knight.... He gave up a potential top 7 pick for him.

So your position is that he does worry about perception? Or is this mainly value with a side of not wanting to look bad?

Both. Lehman Brothers filed bankruptcy because Fuld wouldn't "give" his company away for a cheap price. Executives don't like looking bad and denial is the first stage of grief.

Both.

It sets a precedent.

Unless It would propel Suns to contendership... Where he can justify sacrificing value for a chance to win it all.

If Nets had a late lotto pick... I can see it... But straight swap... Suns GM can get more for Knight.

I really like this trade for the Suns. IMO Young is the better player and his contract is better too.
