December 15th Bayless deal (3): Por

Why? Just because. I mean I fully expect the team to trust him to be a contributing member and buttress the record against historic futility before playing some off ball when Simmons gets back... but I'm generally a fan of the long tank, taking things slow, sucking more now, having more cap space later and solving pg with something more permanent than Bayless (think younger by 10 years). Also, supposedly his sore wrist is better to the point of rehabbing with the dleague team. Seeing as any trade is December 15th, I'm assuming Bayless' wrist is fully healed.

So without further ado:

Phi out: Bayless, OKC 2020 1st (top 20 protected, if not 2 2nds)
Phi in: Crabbe

Por out: Crabbe
Por in: Bayless, Richaun Holmes, OKC 202 1st (top 20 protected, if not 2 2nds)

Contracts:
Bayless: $9,424,084 $9,000,000 $8,575,916
Crabbe: $18,500,000 $19,332,500 $18,500,000 $18,500,000 (PO)

Why?

Portland resolves their financial issues. And they get a protected 1st. Bayless can replace Crabbe as a cheaper but worse shooting guy, although he does have some more ability to play backup pg with Turner as the SG.

For Philly, they get a young sg who can hit open shots, something the team desperately needs, at the cost of just cap space and a protected 1st.

Edit: Fixed the typos!

Is that 202 OKC 1st still protected?!
Talk about lengthy protection.

It is top 20 and 2 2nds if not 21-30 in that first yeat. The year is 2 years after the 2018(+) pick goes to Utah, so in theory it could be a 2022 top 20 protected 2nd. But it is OKC, so it should be 2020.

I think the joke is you wrote 202 - implying it has been protected for about 1800 years. Try and keep up HW.

as a Blazer fan, I'd accept this deal...I'm not sure the Blazer GM would because I would have never matched Crabbe's offer sheet from the Nets.

unfortunately, the deal couldn't happen till Jan 15; Crabbe can veto any trade; and he has a 15% trade kicker. So, it's a tough needle to thread

a question about that trade kicker. I know Portland pays is and it's divided among the remaining season of his contract. Is there any residual charge against Portland's salary cap in the remaining years of the contract?

No. It just would mean Philly has an even more daunting Crabbe on their cap going forward.

You have Phx trading Crabbe for Bayless, Holmes, and a 202 first.

This seems really far off. On a few levels.

Imo Portland should be happy with Crabbe for Bayless straight up.

that's kind of what I thought...that would be almost 3 million/year more 'salary' charges added to Philly's cap....yeeeeesh!

This is Bayless for Crabbe straight up, right? Man, that contract though. Going no. 1 for 3.

Phx is Phoenix. PDX is Portland.

I think you may need to take a step back from the Bayless deals for a few minutes HW.

I might have been copy pasting my intro's. Otherwise any take on it?

Yeah, I like this for Portland too. Bayless improves our backup PG situation a little and I liked Holmes in the draft and he seems to be developing pretty nicely.

Crabbe would be a good floor spacer on the wing next to Simmons, but this seems like a steep way to fill that role. Crabbe is easily the most overpaid NBA player IMH(and probably biased)O.

Haha, fair enough.

As for my take on the deal, I'm gonna part from my fellow Blazer fans here. This doesn't really interest me. Everyone quick to dump the Crabbe contract already, I'm not in that crowd. I'd rather have more patience with it.

Granted, I know nothing about Holmes. He may be a really nice piece that I'm just not aware of.

I'd sooner give any backup minutes to Napier than have a second go with Bayless.
