Por/Phi: #26 and Ezeli for #36 and #39

More draft pick trades!

Philly out: #36 and #39
Philly in: #26 and Ezeli (1m gtd for '17-18)

Portland out: #26 and Ezeli (1m gtd for '17-18)
Portland in: #36 and #39

Why?

Portland saves a bundle on taxes just dropping the small gtd, and doesn't need 3 guaranteed rookie contracts. Instead, they get two high seconds to stash overseas or trade fir future 2nds.

Philly uses #39 and eating Ezeli's 1m to move up 10 spots from #26 to #36, possibly for local favorite Josh Hart?

This is a good option if other options have been exhausted to dump more salary along with #26. Ultimately, the Blazers are my team to watch during draft to see what exactly they do to get better while managing their cap/luxury tax threshold.

probably would be a draft night thing IF they are interested, depending upon who Por likes and if they are available, or if they'd prefer to move down as guys they like are likely to be further down

Imho PJ Dozier is a Sixers target.
So if he has to be picked in the late first round I think this is a move that Sixers have to consider.
On the other hand if I'm Portland I'd try to use one or both the late firsts to move one of their multi-years bad contracts.

Moving back 10 spots to save a million bucks? meh. I am pretty sure Portland is under the tax this season, it's NEXT season we are buried... I think Portland can use 26 to dump more salary than that.

Additionally Portland aleady has 2 other picks, and roster spot issues.. why would they want two additional 2nds?

It is not just moving back 10 spots as there is a second high 2nd in there. :)

As for the financials, it is to save the 1million that Ezeli gets paid *even if cut* next season. With how Portland's roster is currently set up, that looks to be on the border between the 2.5x and 3.25x tax rates. So, it would save somewhere between 3.5m-4.25m.

As for roster spots, early 2nds are easier to stash guys with than late 1sts. Players always have the chance to force a team to sign or cut them. For a late 1st that means 2 guaranteed years at ~1m. For a second rounder it meant 1 fully unguaranteed year at close to 500k. Both numbers should be a little higher now, but the same principle stands.

That may be... but I suspect that Portland can take #26, and send Meyers to Siberia...er... Brooklyn.. which saves about 10 Million.

I would probably do this just to avoid having 3 guaranteed rookie deals next year.

If you can get that you take it and run. But if I'm the Nets, it needs to be #20 to even think about it.

Actually would like to see Portland do both then:
#16 draft (backup center)
#20 -- dump with Leonard
#26 -- dump with Ezeli for 2 high 2nds
#36 -- draft (backup pg?)
#39 -- draft (extra center or sf?

Then again, I'm about to go the opposite direction and a new Portland idea. Portland has a great roster for trades this offseason. You can make a great argument for dumping a contract (even just Ed Davis), moving up, trading back to next year, etc.

Meh, I'm usually a bigger fan of keeping the higher pick, so only if Portland really doesn't like anybody at #26. Otherwise, it is only $1M for Ezeli (super cheap and nearly non-existent compared to how inflated contracts are these days) and a late 1st round rookie salary. I get the idea is to shed salary for Portland, but these contracts are so small that it is pretty much moot and therefore I care more about the talent.

the Blazers aren't using a 1st to get out of a negligible amount of salary. and if there were picks involved, they'd likely want picks in a future draft rather than a 4th pick in this draft.

Would you trade #26 for next year's Cleveland pick (if they could trade it)?

honestly think Olshey made that move to try to get a bit off of the hot seat with Paul Allen, whose love of the NBA draft is well publicized.

I'd predict that no team would pay 32 million for the 26th pick
