John Wall has officially put the Wizards on notice. Fix the front office/bench and he'll sign his super max $168M. Lets pretend Ernie Grunfeld finally gets fired, like he deserves, and you take over as GM. What do you do with with the Draft, FA, and Trades to build a contender with wall.

The wiz only have their 2nd round pick this year, and need to address their bench.

Otto Porter is FA, and will probably get the max somewhere. Go!

Ok first things first. Otto Porter stays, as a max RFA. Bojan Horseman likely to stay as well, I'd imagine in the 3/30 or 4/40 range.

Truth be told.. I dont change that much. I believe in continuity begetting success, and the Wizards have an opportunity here to be deep and talented like the Celtics. Unlike the Celtics though, they dont have the treasure trove of future assets to get better. So the Wizards are best suited to mostly stay the course and make saavy signings/draft picks. Here's what I'd do, now that Porter and Bojan are signed:

Here I would be addressing backup PF and backup PG. I like two combos: Taj Gibson / Darren Collison, or Patty Mills / Nikola Mirotic. Gibson/Collison gives the Wizards a scoring PG and defensive PF, Mills is also a good scorer but Mirotic can spread the court and allow Wall to drive with less resistance. I think I'd prefer Taj/Collison for balance:

Wall / Collison / Mason III
Beal / Bojack / Satoransky

I honestly think it's all a bluff (from Wall's camp). He's taking the super-max regardless of what the Wizards do. And honestly, what can they do? They'll have zero cap room after maxing out Porter. Maybe you can get creative with trades and move Gortat for some bench depth, but then that leaves you pretty thin at C.

Resigning Porter takes Washington close to if not over the luxury tax. Keeping Bogdonovich on $10M/yr would put them well over. They wouldn't have the MLE/BAE to round out their roster, they'd have the tax MLE/vet min to offer instead.

In addition to the loss of flexibility, there's also the issue of just how much luxury tax the team is willing to pay. Especially as next summer Oubre gets more expensive while everyone else stays on the books.

Don't see either Gibson or Collison settling for that number.

Otto isn't getting the max.

Grunfeld will offer something like 5 years $95-100M on the first day of free agency.

I don't think Wall is threatening to leave, not when he's qualified for the DPE and can get multiple Brinks trucks full of cash from the Wizards. If he declines to sign it this summer, it's probably because he can make even more next summer (with an additional year of service in the league his max goes up)

Maybe not, but I had to go far down the list of likely FAs in 2017 to find both of them. Both are bench role players at this stage of their careers, but I guess they could be offered more from middling teams or bad teams who want them to plug a starter's role. Taj I definitely think is more likely to be available cheap.. Collison, hard to say. With his off-court baggage and his mediocre performances as a starter, I think he's cemented his upside as a quality backup scoring PG. He might get more, but the position is so deep and has so much youth, that I'm not sure he will either.

Using the full MLE hard-caps a team at the apron for the rest of the season. Use the full MLE on Gibson and Porter walks because Washington can't legally match a big contract offer.

Spending $18M/yr on your backup center causes problems.

Trade:
IM + J. Smith + Oubre Jr. + Future 1st (protected) to Kings for WCS + Temple + Tolliver

WCS becomes the future defensive bigman to take over for Gortat, while Temple replaces (as a vet) what Oubre Jr. brings to the table. Tolliver NG is waived (I guess I would explore trading NG contract for a useful player on cap strapped team) and creates cap space prior to offseason re-signs.

Actually, using a full MLE on Gibson would put them at 95.4m, and with the tax apron at 128m (and Porter's starting salary @ 25.5m) and 10 players already on the roster, they actually could swing that along with the BAE. But they would have to let Bojan walk in that case. Guess they can't have them all, but they could use the MLE/BAE while retaining Porter. I'd probably lean that way instead of retaining Bojan

Not necessarily sure this is the case. Yes, the money is considerable, but he's also missing out on a treasure trove in terms of endorsement deals that are going to likely be locked away so long as he stays in DC with a small spotlight. When he declined the adidas deal, it was clearly because he was willing to take a risk and bet on himself. A couple of years later and its looking like if he could just
increase his spotlight (winning team) he'd be due for a breakout year in terms of endorsements. So he stands to be able to mitigate the losses from turning this contract down by going to a winning franchise.

If I were him I'd be looking hard at the Pelicans. I think there's a good chance I return to washington sure, but he's definitely got great options if he leaves. The Spurs are going to likely have room to add him in a couple of years as well.
