Bulls - Raptors (Bulls accelerate rebuild)

Post#1 » by Troubadour » Fri Jun 23, 2017 2:46 pm

Bulls Receive
Jonas Valanciunas
2018 2nd Round Pick (lesser of ORL/LAL)

Raptors Receive
2020 2nd Round Pick

Bulls use the trade exception from the Jimmy Butler trade to complete this trade.

Why for the Bulls?
Using the trade exception cap hold to acquire Valanciunas, a young big who is extending is shooting range, gives the Bulls a young veteran to incorporate into their rebuilding process. They also get a 2nd Round Pick in 2018 that they can either use or sell, but one that can help with the rebuild either way.

Why for the Raptors?
Toronto needs to offload salary and delaying a 2nd Round Pick until 2020 seems like a fair way to do it. Valanciunas is hardly dead salary, but if the plan is to re-sign Ibaka, he becomes redundant on a team that already has Jakob Poeltl and Lucas Nogueira.

Toronto should easily say no here. Jonas Valanciunas isn't that bad to be dumped for cap space. As it stands now with both Ibaka and Lowry having massive cap holds Toronto is in no position to go out and find a suitable replacement. I mean who do we go out and get that is as close to being as good as Jonas?

I get that we were using #23 + Jonas to move up in the draft or get a good player but there has to be limits here.

What did you going back to Toronto in mind? I personally wouldn't give up Poeltl to move Carroll.

They tried to trade Jonas for Drummond at the trade deadline I doubt they'd do it for a 2nd round pick
