Supposedly it fell apart because Noone wanted Kevin Love.

Thoughts? Pretty crazy

Credit to the rebel below I found the article where Denver Gm says a deal was close but one of teams backed out at last minute. Must be related

http://www.denverpost.com/2017/06/22/denver-nuggets-nba-draft-2017/

“We were very far along in one,” trade discussion, said Tim Connelly, the Nuggets’ director of basketball operations. “We thought it was done. At the 11th hour, one of the teams involved had a change of heart. While we had countless conversations, there was one in particular we thought was going to take place. It’s never a deal until you have a handshake and a deal and it never got to that point.”

more came out about it from John Ireland

https://cavsnation.com/rumor-cavs-nearly-involved-in-5-team-blockbuster-trade-involving-paul-george/

Appeareantly they didn't like Kevin loves contract

"Loves money was a problem for everybody

I find it hard to believe that there was no way to find a suitable landing spot for Love. Maybe none of those 4 teams wanted him and it was way too complicated to add another team, but there's no way he doesn't still have a bunch of positive value.

It's not that no one wants Love. It's that no one wanted to give up a premium pick and a good player to get him.

That sounds like an awful lot of work for nothing.

It'd be interesting to know what the parameters of the deal happened to be.

Cuz from what it sounds like, how do you pull in 2 other teams' along with NY/IND and interest to get this kind of deal going or down the road since it seems as if they had a framework of something.

Love + Shump was enough salary + 125% +100k less out, more in salary of Melo + PG13 that Cavs could've brought in at the very least.

But I find it hard to believe that would've been all that Cavs had to of been able to give up. Obv. Cedi had to be in the convo. And I would think TT as well possibly.

And NY/IND may've been able to dump Monta/Thad or Lee/Noah to the 4th/5th team.

And the 4th/5th team, I'd assume a high draft pick from one of them, and the other was eating salary? Something like that.

If Love's value wasn't that high then this isn't a real rumor. I also don't see how the salaries work. George and Melo make a TON of money.

If you are looking to find enough value in Love to get both PG and Melo, I can see the problem.

Love+Shump+Frye are almost equal to Melo+George salary. Teams get a 5 million cushion in big trades + the Cavs could have added cash.

As any trade board vet can tell you, it's really easy to propose a trade with multiple teams, if you ignore one team getting a bad return!

Tim Connelly the Nuggets GM was visibly pissed just before and after the draft, and has said that they thought a deal was done and a team pulled out at the very last minute. From all appearances and the rumors out there it sounds like it was likely part of this deal and the rumor is now out that the that the team who was getting Love did not like the medicals and pulled out.

I wonder if PHO was the one who pulled out cuz this would make that Bledsoe to DEN deal seem plausible. Something like:

IND receives DEN #13 + Chriss or Bender or something from PHO

PHO receives Love

CLE receives Melo + PG13

NYK Farried? or Chandler? + Shump (I doubt NY would take him back)

DEN receives Bledsoe + Frye/RJ (they're boys with Kroenke)

And then throw in Cedi to somebody.

IDK, some semblance of that kind of deal. Certainly would've been insane had it gone down though from what little tidbits we're getting about it.

Because Love was only being rumored to lottery teams who Love would have no use for them unless they had ambitions of becoming the Twolves from 2012-2014.(35-42 wins)

No lottery team with a valuable pick besides MN had a foundation that they could afford to trade the pick.

Adding cash doesn't effect salary matching.

I get that, but you should be able to easily find another win-now team who would give value for him. Just because he doesn't fit a lotto team doesn't mean he doesn't have value.

I bet if CHA was involved they ditched any plans when Monk stayed on the board.

Good point. Even if they weren't involved here you have to imagine they had deals in place for a vet for their pick until Monk fell.

I really don't doubt that it was....It could have been part of McD's plan to make sure BOS took someone other than Jackson. "Hey Danny if you grab Jackson at 3, we will pull the trigger on a deal that will send both George and Melo to the Cavs. Good luck playing against those guys next year"

While no GM would make or not make a pick based solely on that type of posturing, in a draft where there is not much separation in that area of the draft, it may have been just enough to make sure that Ainge grabbed Tatum (who is also awesome). Or it could be none of that and PHX was part of the deal to get Love, who they have long had interest in. Either for Bledsoe and #4 for a combo package coming back (something like Love and a late 1st rounder.) The other option might have been Chandler and a pick.

Adding cash doesn't effect salary matching.

1) CLE has no cash to give for 2016-2017 as we blew it all on buying Kay Felder and I think we sent the remaining to either CHA or ATL if I'm not mistaken.

2) And as Hartford said, sending cash doesn't calculate into salary matching.

3) That 5million cushion + incoming salary only applies to non-taxpaying teams (which CLE is not) and has 3 other tiers of what levers get triggered as well but those are non-applicable to CLE. But to see:

Outgoing salary = Maximum incoming salary
$0 to $9.8 million = 150% of the outgoing salary, plus $100,0004
$9.8 million to $19.6 million = The outgoing salary plus $5 million
$19.6 million and up = 125% of the outgoing salary, plus $100,000

So by my fuzzy math, in order for Cavs to take in Melo + PG13's salaries (which is doable but I don't any other team's want their players), if this deal was done before July 1st, CLE would have to send out at the very minimum around 39mil in salary to take on Melo's salary + trade kicker and PG13.

So use any combination of Love/Shump/Frye/Kay, TT/JR/Shump/RJ, Love/TT/RJ all work in some respects.

Like I said, I would be real curious as to who the players were that were going in/out to each team cuz if this thing got blown up cuz of the mess that happened with Griff (as maybe he warned the Suns to pull out and not take Love as he was out the door?) or something. It's the only conceivable reason I could see why it never happened. At least we got some aspect of what "may've" been in play though. My best guess of things that may've been in the pot as "potential" assets:

Possibly #4 but maybe not
#13 pick
#8 pick
Bledsoe
PG13
Melo
Noah (maybe?)
Farried?
Chandler?
Mudiay
Love
Shump/TT/Frye/RJ in some combination?
rights to Cedi.
Monta/Thad (salary dump?) possibly

That's my best guess.

I mean, I don't know about that. How does that get BOS to pass on Jackson if BOS may've thought Jackson was the better prospect than Tatum? I think someone above may've said it best or I heard, that possibly PHO didn't like Love's medical's and that's all it took to blow up the deal, which I think I could see...especially if they were giving up #4 to IND. And then when Jackson fell to #4, that probably could've sealed it as PHO had their guy? Seems plausible especially if PHO promised Jackson he wasn't falling below 4. It certainly makes for an interesting trade that was never made cuz I think RealGM would've melted down if Cavs got PG13/Melo on draft night with the crap we most likely would've sent out.
