Extremely minor: Rockets and Raptors scratch backs

Rockets and Raptors make the Tucker signing a sign and trade.
PJ Tucker for non guaranteed matching salary (Kelly, Taylor, Quarterman), a million in cash, $7.54 million TPE generated
Raptors get cash and a fairly large TPE which can be very useful for an over the cap team, much like the Delly deal last year.
Rockets retain MLE to bring back Nene after the non bird deal fell through.
Would Raptors be willing to do this?

I think raptors are right now focused on what to do with Lowry and ibaka. Then using mle to find a replacement for tucker if they bring Lowry and ibaka
Too much going for masai. To worry about this

Well this wouldn't be until July 6th. When the moratorium is over. Can't sign Tucker before then anyways

Nothing can happen til the moratorium ends.

Totally read it as "can't Tucker sign" lol my bad.
That said, the three guys you suggested wouldn't be enough money to match Tucker.
Even adding a 4th guy might not work depending on exactly what Tucker gets.

I wouldn't be against it. For some reason I still feel like Morey has a bigger plan for those NG contracts though.

Yes it does, those guys * 1.75 +100k gets you to 7.45. If reported terms are correct PJ will be starting at 7.44 (mle -960k for Zhou Qi)
It's reeaaaaall close.
I've seen people saying this generates a 7.5 million to for Toronto but that makes no sense to me and idk where they get that.

If the players involved were signed using the veteran minimum, Toronto could accept them using the vet min exception (any player signed using the vet min can be absorbed by *any* team using a special exception, regardless of the team's cap status).
So the Raptors would absorb Kelly using a vet min exception, Taylor using a vet min exception, Quarterman using a vet min exception, etc. Then assuming there was enough salary, they would be trading Tucker for "nothing" so would get a TPE in the amount of Tucker's full salary.
That said I don't know if all those players were signed using the veteran minimum. Quarterman wasn't, was he?

Yeah they all make the minimum. Awesome! Thanks for clearing that up! Will change op to reflect this. Makes it much more lucrative

Was thinking they'd be in, or going in to, the luxury tax... which would make it 125%.
It will probably fall into the ~$5M range rather than 175%, but they'd make that easily too.

I could see Webster and Morey doing something creative like this

They are quite a bit short of the tax right now. If they do this first they're fine.
But the reported terms were off, Zhou got the absolute minimum and Tucker is starting at 7.6. Long would need to be added now. Nbd

So with Zhou signing for the minimum, he doesn't count towards the MLE at all right?

He does because it's a four year deal. Using the minimum exception you can only sign someone for up to two years
