Who are the best defensive players available via trade?

Post#1 » by NYG » Tue Aug 15, 2017 6:57 pm

There seems to be a lot of talented offensive players on the trade market, but I don't see many defensive players out there. I know it's because they're harder to find and defensive performance can vary more dramatically from year to year and system to system, but who are the best realistic trade targets that are really good defenders?

Going with probably available for this—some may disagree:

Wilson Chandler
Patrick Beverley
Gorgui Dieng
Cole Aldrich
Langston Galloway
E'Twaun Moore
Solomon Hill
Jared Dudley
Lamarcus Aldridge (don't laugh, y'all sleep on his defense)
Derrick Favors
Joe Ingles
Marvin Williams
Robin Lopez
Courtney Lee
Bismack Biyombo

DeAndre Jordan is available if you have the assets to pick him up.

LaMarcus is a good man-on defender, but a poor help defender.

I think Ed Davis and Aminu are available in the right deal.

Is Gorgui Dieng good enough on defense that if the Knicks used a Porzingis based deal to land Kyrie Irving and a Ntilikina based deal to land Andre Drummond and Tobias Harris, they wouldn't get destroyed with a Drummond-Dieng-Harris-THJ-Kyrie line-up?

Leaving aside questions of value (I think both of these are wildly out of line on value):

Unless Drummond suddenly becomes a good defender and Hornacek suddenly becomes a competent defensive coach, you're still looking at a trash fire.

Is John Henson really worth 5.5m in extra cap a year?

I genuinely don't think so and much rather invest and trust in Forcier/Vogel.

NOW if the offer was for pure 100% cap relief, something like Biyombo plus the Brooklyn 2nd for Greg Monroe than I'm all for it and makes a lot of sense.
PM me if you can help a brotha finally get an AVI.

Henson's contract is about the most Biyombo should be getting. talking about trusting Vogel, i think Vogel could get Henson back to his 11/7 year.

Kevin Garnett would barely make that a middling defense, holy cow.

Temple is about the best we got. Probably could get him cheap at deadline.

Andre Roberson was available in free agency but it doesn't appear anyone wanted him.

For what it is worth Nemanja Bjelica is easily one of Minnesota's best defensive players, our defense peaked when he got consistent playing time, only to tank when he got injured. I doubt he would be available for trade (he would barely fetch anything), but I just thought I would throw that bit of information out there for people.

P.J. Tucker will eventually be available for the right price, especially if we have to cut a bit of salary next summer.
