Off the Wall trade idea (Lakers)

Trade John Wall? Are you nuts? Well, it's not about his play; it's about the 4/170 extension that starts in the '19/'20 season that's going to put Washington in a hole and likely prevent them from re-signing Oubre and a bench. In the 2022/23 season, Wall is scheduled to make $46,872,000 - and the salary cap and lux tax are not going up accordingly. Washington's not a market that can handle a large lux tax and LAL is, imo. So, here's the deal: Wall for Ball, Nance, Hart, and Brewer (expiring). Washington also throws in Tim Frazier and Sheldon Mac. The Lakers get the big star they wanted and can still probably still work out signing someone like George in the offseason, they don't have to worry about Ball's father, and am I right in saying Nance is unhappy with his role in LAL - now that Randle is clearly ahead of him in the pecking order? What this does for the Wiz is given them a LOT more salary flexibility, and Nance would be a very nice fit at PF/C for them. Hart gives them a needed backup at the 2. Washington hurts themselves for the playoffs run, but they're not a championship team with him. And Ball actually had a very good December - showing he's not nearly as bad as he was to start the season - almost all PG's suck as rookies. Look at his December stats before saying he's not any good.

No. just for the mere fact that the deal comes with Lavar. If I had white gloves, I'd take it off and smack you.

Having a star in place can help persuade others to join more than promise and youth. Not bad

Yeah, it would probably help to attract someone like George or Cousins (Wall's buddy).

I've suggested Wall is the one player I think I would consider trading Gobert for.
A Wall, Donovan, Exum (yes jJazz fans still believe in Exum) back court would be the most athletic backcourt in the league. It is totally unproven and their shooting percentages would have to increase. But I am intrigued by the idea of a hyper athletic backcourt on the Jazz. A lineup of Wall, DM, Exum, Ingles with possibly Favors in the middle is a unique idea. I think the home court advantage with those guys running and playing at elevation would be real. No one wants to come to Utah already. Maximizing the home court advantage is something the Jazz have to think about and right now they play at a slower pace than most teams.
I say all this only to suggest that if Wall is on the move, other teams could possibly outbid LA.

If I'm the Lakers, I'm not taking Wall without sending out Deng. You can have Ball & Nance, but I have to unload some salary in order to offset that insane contract. There is no bringing a third star if you've got Wall and Deng on the books.

That's being a little overzealous. I'm not sure there's a deal where Washington takes him on as their incentive to deal Wall would be cap flexibility due to their high payroll and with already being capped out and having Mahinmi I don't see a way they'd take Deng.

I like John Wall but he's not a top 5 player. I'm not even sure he's top 10. You can't commit almost 50% of your cap space to him. There's no way I'd trade for him on that contract unless I was able to send some bad money out. I don't believe Wall can be traded until the summer anyway so we're talking about two years of Deng at $18 million.

There would have to be a third team involved and you would need to send out Ingram and a pick to that team. Yes, I believe it would take that much for a team to take on Deng's contract.
One example - Utah could send Joe Johnson and Favors. JJ's contract is expiring and LA could sign Favs on a deal if they felt like it. LA sends Deng, Ingram, 2020 first round draft pick. It is just one idea. But there are few teams in the league who I think could do it and make it work. Utah is probably one of 5-6 teams who I think would even sniff at that type of deal.

I would rather have Wall than our other free agent targets (minus LeBron). He's an elite 2 way point guard and if we got him for the deal OP made, I don't think there's a way we could say no. I do get your point though.

I'm not seeing elite defense from him. Even in the playoffs. There's an argument to be made that Brooks is playing him too many minutes but Schroeder and IT lit him up last year. When you're athletic as Wall is, that shouldn't happen.

Are you serious? Thomas and Schroeder are two of the best guards in the league...they light up everyone they play.

Yesterday I was lurking on your Trade Board, and you guys had a great discussion about trading John Wall, with a lot of solid takes. You guys taught me a lot. Two thumbs up.

Love the idea of LA trading for Wall. Think that almost guanratees Cousins comes. THen how hard would it be to get the space for PG as well?

I'd say Wall for Deng, Ball, Nance, Hart, 2020 LA 1st unp
Then Clarkson, Ingram, Brewer for Cousins
Sign PG in the offseason (not that I want him to leave):
Wall/
FA
PG
Kuzma/Bryant
Cousins/Zubac

One thing I'm not sure about - Is there any poison pill provision caused by Wall's extension that makes it harder to trade him?

Lakers aren't getting a third star anyway. There's no room for 3 stars.
