10 Least Tradable Contracts for RealGM

Post#1 » by Smitty731 » Mon Jan 29, 2018 2:29 pm

Hi all!

Here is my list of the 10 Least Tradable Contracts for the site:

https://basketball.realgm.com/analysis/248750/The-10-Least-Tradable-NBA-Contracts-Of-2018

Love to hear some thoughts on the list. As a disclaimer, I could have made this list at least 25 deep. 2016 and 2017 did a number on cap sheets.

Thanks!

I would rather have Asik's deal than Mozgov's. I think you were too down on Asik who may be useless but is significantly less money than some.

Totally fair. Asik was very hard to place this year. My thought was that while he does make less, until Cousins got hurt (and who knows if he'll even stay in the rotation) he wasn't playing at all. Mozgov could still contribute in the right situation.

I also think you were to down on Asik. He his the least worse contract of those in my book, due to length of contract and value. Next year he'll basically be an expiring.

All the rest seem fine while I'm almost sure I could find a deal to add and replace Asik's. I'll think about it and come back here with the answer :)

Oh you can find a deal to replace Asik really easy. I mean really, really easy!

I'd have to think Wes Matthews, Myers Leonard, and Mo Harkless are on there, was surprised Evan Turner, Ryan Anderson, Bismack and Gorgei Dieng were not in the top 10, I'd put both of them over Asik.

I like to nominate Jon Leuer that signed a 4 year-$42 Million deal before last season.

Although the numbers might not be as big as some of the others, it's pretty brutal for Piston fans.

Nice work as always Smitty. If you're going to have Batum/Conley on there I'd also have Holiday though. I know he's played well this year, but his deal runs a year longer than those two and he has had his own injury concerns throughout his career.

I think if Memphis shopped Conley back when he was healthy someone would have tried to get him. I could see teams still wanting him in the offseason if he heels alright.

Id rather have Asik than 3 of the guys below him on this list and plenty of guys who arent on it.

considering he was already almost moved in a deal for Reggie Jackson earlier this year I'd say hes pretty moveable.

Fwiw I don't think Conley belongs here. But good job Smitty!
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.

Very very solid list Smitty.

It’s crazy to see Memphis having two of the worst contracts in the league and that’s not including Marc Gasol who is on a decline himself.

Glad to see Biyombo nearly escaping the top ten, but when I think about it he might make it past the top 20 with Jackson/Leuer/Turner/Dieng/Plumlees/Anderson etc. still on horrible non productive contracts.

Asik has Crohn's disease, and that's some very serious stuff, especially for a pro athlete his size. I think he certainly belongs here.

I think we have trouble comparing under-performing longer contracts, and a contract that may produce nothing on a shorter deal. One idea I use is to simply try to imagine what kind of contract a player would get in current free agency, for his expected production. I think a player like Asik would struggle to get any offer, so his full contract is negative value. Another player who's on a longer deal, but overpaid by a couple million, is probably not as negative.

Anderson starts and is playing well for one of the best teams in the NBA. He's overpaid, but starting and playing well counts for a lot. I didn't even really consider putting him on the list.

Biyombo and Dieng are both rotation players. Neither is any sort of star, but both are healthy and contribute. Again, they are overpaid, but not by a ridiculously amount for a rotation guy. That kept Biyombo off the list for me.

In no real order here are the other guys I had in consideration:
George Hill
Evan Turner
Meyers Leonard
Kyle Lowry (only because of injury considerations)
Jonas Valanciunas (kind of a dinosaur now, even if I personally think he's fairly paid for his role)
Serge Ibaka
Reggie Jackson
Langston Galloway
JR Smith
Tristan Thompson
Cristiano Felicio
Dion Waiters
Bismack Biyombo

I love the feedback though. Would love to see some others you think belong on the list!

Holiday was healthy all of last year (his time missed was for his wife, not himself) and has been so far this year. He's played great this season, so that kept him off. But fair criticism for sure.

That is a salary dump for a salary dump. I think that falls under the "no one is really untradable" caveat that I put near the top of the piece.

Heck, Miles Plumlee got traded last year almost immediately after the piece posted. And then he got traded again this summer!

FWIW, I kind of wanted to see if I could make the entire list just bigs who were overpaid in 2016 or 2017. I didn't have time, but I bet you could do it with relative ease.
