I figured I'd start a fun little project and try to find the missing piece for each playoff team that is 1. Realistic 2. A role player (no AD, Holiday, superstar FA's, etc.) and 3. Will take them to the next step. I.e. an 8th seed to a competitive/potential home court advantage type of team or a 4th seed into a contender if possible.
Houston Rockets (4)
Boston Celtics (4)
Indiana Pacers (5)
Utah Jazz (5)
OKC Thunder (6)
Brooklyn Nets (6)
Orlando Magic (7)
San Antonio Spurs(7)
LA Clippers (8)
Detroit Pistons (8)

Pistons need a stud SF in the worst way to pair with Kennard on the wing. Bruce Brown (project) ain't going to be cut it if they want to take the next step. Tobias Harris, Robert Covington, Kris Middleton come to mind who can take some pressure off Blake.

shame this ran out of steam.
for Portland, the obvious answer was "Jusuf Nurkić".

I'm going to go with Otto Porter for Portland. With their roster as is, I think he's a major difference maker.

Marvin Williams would be a perfect fit on Houston's roster. Would give them an above average 3 point shooter with PF size who could defend smaller players.

He has potential as a buyout guy.

Throwing this out there if were talking about buyout guys, I could see Toronto doing Kyle Lowry a solid and buying him out after the deadline if they can not generate anything worthwhile in a trade (not counting a 2nd rd pick) at the deadline and they commit to starting a rebuild/retool around VanVleet/Powell/OG/Siakiam, based on the team looking like it will be a lower trier playoff team and not a real contender.
In that scenario, he would be a huge addition for either the Lakers or Philly.
