I'm really struggling with the idea that McKinnie is a top available player if Chriss beat him out for the final roster spot.

Jarret Allen isn’t winning you anything. Garland won’t show up in the playoffs. Mobley is a glorified dunk man. Mitchell has some experience but is a liability on defense. To me, the Cavs are a treadmill team.

I feel that this was done due to injuries to the other bigs on GSW. Looney and WCS haven't played in the preseason and may miss time into the regular season. This has left GS very small inside. Of course now they're thin on the wings. This will be a big problem all season as they can't afford a 15th man. If guys get injured they're just hosed.

McKinnie is hot garbage. Let's see how he does without 4 all-stars around him.

How is McKinnie's defense?

Teams can certainly do worse for a 15th man, but not exactly big news.

I would say McKinnie's defense is below average. Not terrible, but he's missing the 3 and the D from 3 & D. What he does provide is rebounding and hustle. He came up with some really big OREB's during the regular season and playoffs last year. Also appears to be a solid teammate.

On the bottom half of your roster he can be a nice addition. Say roster spots 10-15. Unless his shot really comes around, I don't see him being much more than an end of the bench / hustle guy. Of course for us he would have been our backup SF playing 20+mpg but that says more about our SF position than his play. Wish him the best.
