Iguodala TPE -> Player X -> Aaron Gordon

Is this scenario legal and doable?

July 2020
1. Warriors trade Iguodala TPE ($17,185,185) for James Johnson ($15,827,100)
2. Warriors trade James Johnson ($15,827,100) plus picks for Aaron Gordon ($18,136,364)

Main question, can the Warriors immediately trade away the player they just acquired via TPE?

Technically I don’t think that’s allowed, but it’s been done before and no one batted an eye.

Can you provide more information about the previous case?

I don't see why it wouldn't be legal.

Really?

Let's say the Warriors trade for James Johnson on July 1. Then they trade him for Aaron Gordon on July 4.

If I'm not mistaken teams must wait a certain period of time to retrade a player that they just traded for.

You have to wait to certain amount of time to trade him with out players is the rule I believe, can trade him again by himself.

You are mistaken...

Players can be traded again immediately. The rule is that they can not be traded in aggregate (combined with another player's salary).

A trade like this would be prohibited: Johnson + low salary -> Gordon
A trade like this is perfectly legal: Johnson + picks -> Gordon

In 2015, the Memphis Grizzlies absorbed Luke Ridnour into a TPE. The next day, they flipped him to Charlotte for Matt Barnes, who IIRC would not have fit into the TPE.

This is called "jumping the base" and is supposed to be against the spirit of the CBA. But as gswhoops said, this happened and nobody cared.

(Ridnour had an unguaranteed contract, which under that CBA could be traded and then cut. He was flipped all over the place that summer!)

I'm happy that I'm wrong. Thanks for the info!

Oh yeah I do remember that infamous Luke Ridnour USA tour.

Thanks for the info!

Yes this is ok to do and if they do it idk what it would cost asset wise to get it all done. Bobby portis would also work here and if the trade is done right Orlando can take the asset and cut portis for much less money than Johnson .

Theoretically legal but the league could say no and you're stuck with James Johnson and they'd probably put some trade restriction on him if they really didn't want you to do it. It would be taking a chance much like the Rockets did with the Nene deal

Pretty sure Hollinger wrote about an idea of similar with MKG to the Lakers, I don't see why not this.

Remember, usually July 1-6th or 7th is the moratorium, so theoretically, with Iggy’s TPE expiring 7/7, the deals would have to happen the same day.

It’s technically illegal, but has happened. However, it’s possible the league may not allow it if the trade happen on the same day as there’s no argument that “we would’ve kept the guy but another offer to flip him came along and we couldn’t resist” if you’ve been in line on hold with the league office post moratorium to process all your deals you made. But, we could probably operate as if it’d be allowed in this forum Until we see otherwise :dontknow:

****. This whole thing is getting trickier and trickier.

Now here's a simple question that might be the key to pull off the scenario. When does the new cap calendar starts? I'm talking about the first date when the league begins to use the 2020/21 salary cap regulation.

forget the legalities. Why would Golden State want to do this?

I don’t think they do for AG. But the whole trade the TPE for a expiring contract makes a lot of sense. To go after a player who doesn’t fit into current Iggy TPE — here is looking at you Turner (for example).

A trade could easily happen 'after' the season in May or June. There's no need to wait for a trade to happen in July.

Also, the trade scenario is NOT illegal. The league offices go by the written CBA agreement of what is allowed or not. They don't have some hidden agenda where they say 'we don't like this , so we're not going to allow the trade to happen'.

It's legal or not... very black & white. Just because you don't understand the rules doesn't mean they aren't clearly defined.

July 1st. During the moratorium. Depends on how fast the accountants work, but generally, the moratorium has ended between July 5-7 in the past.
