Offseason extension unlikely for Bam Adebayo [Windhorst]

"He’s not going to get a max contract in the offseason,” Windhorst said of Adebayo. “Even though I think he should. Because the Heat are going to save money for the 2021 summer. That’s a storyline that I can almost guarantee for you: Bam Adebayo will not sign a contract extension this offseason. It will be, ‘Bam, we’ll take care of you later.'”

Yup. Obvious is obvious.

Max cap space and Bam, or just Bam. Seems pretty obvious, especially if Bam is on board.

Bam is legit good, he's a max player in himself.

They shouldnt extend Bam bc of Butler. Riley has this exact experience in 2010 where he woed 3 superstars from chicago by claiming his team could land all 3 and won it all. Probably told Bams agent to calm down and got a promise they will sign him later after getting Giannis and Kawhi and try to ship off Butler for blue chip prospect like Mitchell.

What Miami is trying to do is what the Knicks did last yr but the Knicks never had the personnel, experience to pull it off.

Wait. I thought the options are:
A. Cap space for 2 max + Adebayo RFA
B. Cap space for 1 max + Adebayo max extension

Who's right? Is it me or you?

With the likely dip due to COVID-19 it’s become Butler+max vet FA+max RFA if we wait to sign Bam, or Butler+extended Bam+max RFA (maybe).

Bam’s cap hold is low for a max player (not as criminally low as Robinson’s & Nunn’s though), due to his draft position. So we can extend the QO, sign our max FA, plus a max RFA or other high level complementary player(s), then sign Bam to a max RFA deal.

Clearing Winslow off the books got us close to the Bam, Butler +2 in 2021, but with COVID it’s now out the window (I think we needed the cap to keep increasing to make it happen). If the league give everyone an amnesty then we’re possible back to 2 max - as long as we can use it on Anderson’s stretched money (~$5m).

We won’t be shipping out Jimmy, he’ll be doing our recruiting and sales pitches behind closed doors over the next season.

To equate it to 2010, it would be like using Wade to get Bron & Bosh, then using the space left to sign a max FA who fits better with Bron. Not happening in Miami. We’re rolling with Jimmy until his deal is done, or he asks out.

Just the one max available with Bam no extension. With extension gets real tight.

Butler + Herro alone is 40Mil. Bam cap hold is 15’ish mil. So even if they zero out to those 3 — with roster spots hold around 10ish mil — they are at 65Mil. Max cap they are after will be 33-37mil (depending on cap and who). Giannis is 30% of cap.

Now, if 2x stars want to take less than max, anything can be done.

No way Miami will get 2MAX Spots:

Jimmy salary 2021: 36M
Bam Cap Hold: 15,5M
Ryan Anderson Dead Cap Space 5M
Hero: 4M
KZ Ozala: 2M
Nunn Cap Hold: 2M
Duncan Cap Hold: 2M
Roster Spots (6): 5,5M
Total: 72M
It's barely enough to 1 Max Players (30% of Cap). Cap space needs to stay over 104M to do it.

Miami might want to sign and trade for a third star after re-sign Bam, Duncan and Nunn.

I would rather trade Adebayo (awful fit with Giannis) than package Herro, Nunn and Duncan.

no reason to do an extension now if they're planning to use 2021 cap space.

For all inclusive math, you need to add the 2020 FRP.

If Bam and Giannis are friends, as reported, it doesn't matter his fit. It would have to be a substantial star traded for to offset that.

They'll have room for one max player only without a Bam extension. The difference between signing him now or later is between 10-15 million depending a few factors. 15 mil gets you a solid top 8 rotation guy. Is that worth waiting for? Probably.
