The Grizzlies have about $113mil in salaries guaranteed next season.
If Memphis decides to shed salary for numerous reasons (loss revenue, declining cap etc) or they want to better allocate resources, does the following salary dump make sense?
Grizz trade/Knicks recieve:
Gorgui Dieng (1 year 17.5mil)
Grayson Allen
2020 Utah Jazz 1st (protected top 7, #15-30 in 2020-21, top 6 in 2022, top 3 in 2023, top 1 in 2024, else 2025 second round pick, 2026 second round pick)
Grizz receive/Knicks trade:
2020 Clippers 1st Rounder
Reggie Bullock
Why?
Grizz cut about $13.5mil in 2020-2021 salary obligation. They snag a 2020 pick where they can get another young cost controlled player. Bullock is on a 1 year 4.25mil deal and would be a solid vet who can provide shooting
Knicks take on Dieng's deal in a salary dump. They get Grayson Allen, who I think would be a great fit between RJ, Frank and their 2020 1st rounder (assuming it's not Edwards) and they snag a future draft pick that allows them to continue to accumulate draft capital which I assume they eventually flip for the next disgruntled star

I wouldn't use that Utah pick to dump a contract. Gobert could leave in free agency 2021 and that pick becomes gold.

If Memphis does anything cap related, it needs to be making sure that they have the ability to sign 1.5-2 Max FAs in '21 to pair with Ja + JJJ before they are due their own big contracts. Can you imagine if they could get Giannis + another top FA? Hell just Ja/Giannis/JJJ would be a long term title contender IMO.

It might be risky for Memphis but it is very likely that the Knicks just eat Dieng for nothing in return. An exchange of draft picks, where the knicks give theirs now and get one two years in the future. It will cost a first rd pick to eat 17 mill of salary. never mind getting one back.

Memphis wont need to dump Dieng's expiring salary. If they were actually dumping salary it would be Anderson, Valanciunas and maybe brooks to open up 2021 FA space.

This is a silly deal. Who knows when we'll get the first rounder from Utah but its definately not going to be this year. We're giving up a late first rounder this year for the priviledge of waiting for that pick and helping Memphis save money. Nope. No thank you.
Why rely on nuance, facts and logic when you can bludgeon the other side with mindless repetition of "Duuur McDaniel's has potential and still be treated as if you were reasonable.

Re: Memphis/NY (Salary Dump)
Memphis gave up a ton of positive value to absorb Winslow and a pair of bad deals in Waiters (who they waived) and Dieng. I can’t imagine they’re sweating things that much. It would probably take the owners getting crushed by COVID to make a deal like this.
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.
