Odd this is happening now unless one of these teams needs the pick to do something else. A little confused. But obviously in a vacuum its a win for NY.

Yeah usually I'd imagine they'd wait to see who is available there before trading up. Maybe they just wanted to consolidate I guess

There is a chance that someone can fall out of top-15... from this perspective, NY looks like a winner...

idk that I'd give up an early 2nd to move up 4 spots in the 20s. Rather have two bites at the apple but that's just me. Maybe the Knicks had intel that their top targets for #27 were going to get snatched up by a team in front?

Wow! This is a great trade. I love it. In such a crapshoot of a draft picking up another top 40 pick for drop of just 5 places is great. Nice. Now Woodard makes even more sense for the Jazz, since 23 seemed a bit too high for him.
On the other hand... isn't it a bit weird that NYK are doing that trade before the draft and before knowing whether the guy they want is going to be there? This seems like somewhat of an erratic move for them.

If they really like a player in that range is a no brainer for them, but idk why they traded now and not on draft night

Thought we were getting some high lotto action. Disappointing.
But this seems kind of premature and a deal I’d look to make during the draft when I know who’s around after pick 15 or so.

In a vacuum the difference between having the 38th pick and having no pick is greater than the difference between the 23rd pick and the 27th. Trading up is what you’d do if there was a specific player available at 23 who was much better than the average 23rd pick, which is the opposite of ‘in a vacuum.’

Works for me as a Utah fan. We need depth badly and I'm not all that fussed about the difference between 23 and 27. Getting an early-mid 2nd for that looks good AFAIC!

Odd timing.
But love it for the Jazz. In such a shallow draft two bites in that range are better than one.

Of course its in a vacuum because these are picks and not specific players--typically these deals happen on the clock when a team isn't trading for a pick but rather a player. Without knowing who is on the board at 23 we can't really gauge this as well.
And we can all disagree on value--but I'd rather have the higher pick personally.

more importantly I predicted 10 1st round picks would move and we are off to a good start--though now I am pretty worried I undershot the mark.

The Knicks never deserve the benefit of the doubt.
But the reasons to do this now are two fold:
1) There is a player that the Knicks tried to give a promise at #27 that also had a promise below them
2) Utah had multiple trade down offers on the table, and the Knicks didn't want to risk not moving up for a specific player
Anyway, pick #38 is easily replaced as picks in the 40's tend to sell every draft night, and NY is never shy of spending cash (especially for bad players).
But again, as a Knick fan, I question every move the franchise makes until they gives us reason to believe otherwise.

I personally see no difference in 23 and 27/38 so I walk away from this trade as both winners but New York getting the slightly better end of the deal.
New York is now in a position to potentially offer 8/23 to move up to 7 or 6 if they really like a player. I dont think 8+27+38 moves up but 8+23 can.

I’d see this more as Knicks lining things up to be ready to move into the top 5 easier on draft night, if things fall a certain way.

I think its reverse.
Utah has a deal lined up where they send out a 1st and they are getting extra value.

To me, this feels like a slight overpay, especially to make this far ahead of the Draft.
