$5 million for a second-round pick? Guess Fertitta really isn't cheap, he's just stupid.

Yeah I think Woj is misusing "via", if he means the LAKERS' 2nd round pick being bought from Detroit.
(Or he means HOU is buying Detroit's 2nd rounder from the Knicks, not the Lakers. Either way the tweet is a bit of a mess.)

I don't recall deals like this happening before the draft. Usually it's during the draft to get a guy.
This also seems to be a huge amount if it's for a 50-something pick?
I also expected Houston's owner to be much cheaper?

Seems like it should be part of the other trade. Sending some money to cover Ariza's deal while getting a little value back via this 2nd.

I don't get this for the Rockets. The owner seems to be trying to save money yet drops nearly $5m for a super late 2nd. That's a ton to pay for that pick.

Hopefully this is just part of the Ariza trade because that's terrible value

Ariza deal has to happen in the next league year, but this deal allows Houston to send out the last remaining cash they can from this previous league year.
It will be separate, and processed across two different league years, but look at it as overall one deal.

Which means they essentially cheating the system, and did cash in the wrong year. Which is not the first time this has happened (Philly).

So is the cash part of 19/20 or 20/21?

Oh my god! Bill O'Brien snuck out of the Texan's office and into the Rocket's offices.

Should be 19/20.
Houston already had: Cash Paid ($5,617,000 max): $1 million to the Oklahoma City Thunder (Russell Westbrook).
Detroit had: Cash Received ($5,617,000 max): $0
This enables Houston and Detroit to send/receive cash in 20/21.

Buying the future second for $4.2m will be in this 2019/20 season. It’s literally exactly what Houston has left in cash payable from this season.
