Ariza/16 to Detroit for future protected pick: your take?

Mess with Texas: Detroit wins. Selling capspace and a pick that might be years away for #16 is great whether they use it or move up.

Piston, We Have a Problem: Houston wins. Giving up a future pick during a rebuild like Detroit just did is never a good idea.

Pick 'Em: both sides win. Houston needs savings, Detroit needs young talent now.
2

No Good Ariza'n: both sides lose. Houston is just annoying its stars for savings, and Detroit is going to regret this later.

AFAIK Detroit doesn't have any firsts incoming from other teams, so it's definitely one of their own. Obviously protections are a big deal, so waiting on those...

So guess this settles the partial guarantee thread from yesterday on Ariza

The protections on that pick make all the difference. If there's any plausible chance of Detroit sending back a top-10 pick it's a horrible deal for Detroit.

I'm going to be honest, if that Detroit first has decent protections and becomes 2nds then Houston may have straight up sold #16 to get off Ariza's salary. That's pretty gross.

yeah, waiting on protections, but anything short of lottery protection is a stupid move for Detroit, and anything that doesn't guarantee a pick conveying looks terrible for Houston

I feel like Shams, got sniped on this thread by seconds.

What is awful is that this basically equals Robert Covington and cash for Portland's pick next year and (likely) seconds.

DET been rumored to move up. Could have something to do with that too. Maybe #16 + #7 intrigues someone in the top 5.

If Wiseman is gone, you have my interest at pick #3

Why buy a team if you don’t have the money to run it? Houston is a disaster now.

I actually am not sure I like these protections for Detroit, this massively hamstrings their flexibility on trading picks. The value is absolutely superb, but the protections on that Draft pick are annoying to navigate around for Detroit.

okay so this is awful for Houston full stop. Agree with Dome that the loss of flexibility stings a bit for Detroit, but the value is clearly terrific and they shouldn't have big plans anytime soon.

Wild. This off-season is already so wild.

Agreed I hate when teams lock their picks up this long I’d rather give up worse protections.

A rebuilding team shouldn’t be looking to trade future picks. I’m ok with the deal but hope that if we make the playoffs, the pick moves. I’d hate to give up a future low lotto pick in this type of deal.

Owner was heavy in COVID-hit businesses. He's riding the struggle bus and kicking out every Houston player he can along the way.
