Shams: LeBron signs 2 year max extension
Well this closes the door on a third max next summer. Good for LA though, they lock LeBron in. Makes it likely that LAL is his last ride unless/until he signs with whomever drafts Bronny.

Lakers' "Best move" thread just got a lot easier.

So much for the 'James is going to take a paycut to recruit a 3rd star in 2021' delusion.

I wonder if 3 more seasons is the amount of time left he wants to keep playing.

I hope nobody seriously thought that. Lebron is well on record stating that he has an obligation to other players to never take less on a contract again(he did take less on that Heat deal I believe?). He said he appreciated Duncan and Dirk among others who made that choice, but that with his stature in the league he feels it vital to always take the most so teams don't try and guilt their stars into taking less.
And I absolutely respect his stance on that. The guy gets a lot of unnecessary hate and not nearly enough credit for all the stuff he has done for player empowerment.

Just in time for training camp, expect the AD contract signing to follow soon.

Wonder if the Lakers asked Lebron to sign this so AD would sign a longer extension as opposed to a 1+1? Easier to get AD to commit to more years with Lebron locked in long-term.

Yeah, this would mean AD signs 2+1 instead of 1+1 to align himself with LeBron and get to his 10th season.

Also worth remembering that yes, he did take less than the max in Miami, in part so the team could continue to add talent, which they did with Mike Miller.
And then Arison later cut Miller under the tax amnesty and put the money back in his own pocket.
I think that was a real eye-opener for LeBron and co., and AFAIK he never took less than the max again.

Yeah, this would mean AD signs 2+1 instead of 1+1 to align himself with LeBron and get to his 10th season.
That, and have to imagine that AD likely wanted some assurance in his own negotiations that Lebron would be there too.
Either way, there's just no way you can't like this. It's a ton of money, and he's old, but he's Lebron, and he'll still be super useful as long as he's on your books. He'll recruit, and he'll make life easier for everyone else, and he helps bring back the Showtime atmosphere and credibility for the Lakers.

Think it's more LeBron told Lakers what he wanted. I assume AD already know Lebron's plans . They seem like legit friends.
Think AD is debating the 10 year vet max contract to replace his super max he passed on.

Re: Shams: LeBron signs 2 year max extension
So obviously this is a win for the Lakers, but Silver has to be dancing in the streets. Yes, Lebron has given no indication of wanting to retire, but having the face of your league around for 3 more seasons buys him and the league time for the next generation of stars to rise up without having to carry the league prematurely.
And as a Mavs fan with a guy who is certainly being positioned to maybe be that next guy, I thought he really benefited as a rookie from Dirk being around to be a voice and share the spotlight and I think he benefits from Lebron still being around for 3 more years(at least). He won't face that same pressure of delivering titles and not just numbers quite so quickly as he might otherwise.
Absurd how long we've had Lebron and how he's still the cornerstone of the league. Nobody has ever approached this length of being "the man". Hard to believe considering all his accolades and accomplishments and he's still underappreciated. He is going to leave a massive void when he is done in a way no other player ever has--including Russell and Mike.

Re: Shams: LeBron signs 2 year max extension
LeBron would have had to take a really huge paycut so that the Lakers would have been able to sign a Max FA.'
Seems like he did a Sign & Trade to Miami under a more permissive CBA so that he could have larger raises than if he went there as a regular FA.

Anytime you can resign the best player in the NBA to an extension is a good deal.

Absolutely this, and of course by its nature the maximum contract underpays LeBron already.
