The (un)official Lowry megathread: What is Lowry worth and trade ideas?

Post#1 » by HartfordWhalers » Tue Jan 5, 2021 5:38 pm

Instead of seeing this debate in 12 different threads, what about an (un)official Lowry megathread?

2 Simple questions:
1) What is Lowry worth?
The negatives: Expiring with a 30.5m salary. 35 years old in March.
The positives: Good at basketball. All star last 6 seasons in a row and stats this year look fine.

2) Where would be the best trade for Lowry, or should Toronto keep him?

Fire away.

So he makes a lot of money. So there is no simple he's worth draft pick X because matching salary will be involved and it can vary greatly.

But I have him as still positive value even though his contract is large and is expiring. I would think some teams(Miami and Dallas stand out) who would prefer the flexibility of this--others including Brooklyn, Utah, Philly, Milwaukee, Denver, Clippers, Pels would would probably like to negotiate an extension as part of the deal.

Miami to me makes the most sense. He fits their culture perfectly, they have trivial salary matching, and he allows them to keep their FA powder dry. They have enough assets to make a deal happen.

Dallas makes the most sense just because I want it to happen. They too have the contracts though meeting the value price is harder for them than the Heat as they have less attractive assets.

But all of the teams I named above should at least explore it. He's still really good.

I would love him on the Celtics in place of Kemba, personally.

I think 1 decent 1st (like in the 15ish range) or a late 1st+meh prospect should be the going rate. Tho if Raps keep losing, they might have a firesale where he goes just for any 2021 1st.

I think Raps should trade him, personally. I think theyve gone as high as they could and the only reason they might not be 1 of the worst teams in the league this year is cause of Lowry. I saw a stat where he was the only + through the first 3 games of the season (where Raps went 0-3), which is impressive as chit

He makes the most sense on the Sixers. The Clippers have an obvious need but they have very little to offer. If the Raptors would take back Kemba, and I'm not sure they would, then the Celtics should be players. I think Harden may have to get traded first.

I just think that in order to return what the Raptors want, he's going to have to go to a team that needs guard help rather than a team where he'd be nice get.
It is highly unlikely that the Cavs will agree with your Kevin Love evaluation for the purpose of a trade.

About the same package the Raptors gave to the Grizzlies for Gasol 2 years ago.
Fill the blank for the desired team.

The salary issue is real since it will depress his market. Just not that many teams have enough expiring salary to cobble together to match where you aren't losing enough rotation players to negate what he brings. One thing we don't know is if Toronto is open to multi-year contracts now that the 2021 free agent class is, how you say, not great anymore.

I have him worth a 1st and a 2nd if you're just sending back expiring contracts or two firsts if you're dumping two years of salary on Toronto.

They should be. If you can’t use cap space on a deserving max player you may as well use it to acquire draft picks they may turn into a max player (however unlikely that always is).

Yeah which is why Miami just seems like the most logical team. They have enough expiring contracts and while they don't readily have immediate picks they have enough interesting young players that could either satisfy the Raps directly or be routed to a 3rd team for a player/picks that the Raps would prefer.

Obviously if Toronto is willing to take back 2 year deals a number of other teams become real players and I would have Denver looking to use the Harris/Barton package on him since clearly Siakam isn't going to Houston for Harden in this scenario. Or the Nets for sure like Saul suggested. Or I really like him going to the Pels.

LOL basically I love Kyle for everyone it appears.

Philly does seem a great fit, especially since Lowry is a Temple guy who loves the city.

Green + expirings + sweetener works. Philly might have to add up a number of bodies but can use the Horford TPE to take some back.

Lowry is better than Dragic and Miami has the expirings to match salary. No picks until 2025, but they do have some kids they can use for value.

He'd be fantastic on Dallas or the Clippers, but both have more luck matching salary than they do adding future value because they both have so many picks in hock.

Lowry would even look great running the show in New York, but they seem unlikely to offer much more than capspace and C-level prospects. And I suspect with everything he has meant to the Raps, they'd rather move him to a contender anyway.

It's hard to say for sure because conceivably you could resell that cap space next summer so take a 1st and a 2nd for expirings now and then pick up more assets for your space next summer. But it's hard to know what the landscape for that really is though Masai is one of, if not the best, GMs out there so I'd trust him.

I also think you could see a three team trade where, for example, Philly sends a 1st and a 2nd along with Green and some driftwood for Lowry and the Raps then trade Green elsewhere for another asset (though this would likely require bad two year salary coming back).

Villanova, not Temple fyi.

Your second point brings up a question I've been wondering about. Can you take players into a TPE simultaneously with a trade. So let's say the Sixers need to send out four players to match Lowry's salary and Toronto will be sending Lowry back and then also three other players into TPEs. Does Toronto still need to cut three players for the Lowry trade before executing the TPE trades or can it be done together?

It can be done together and frequently is, even if just to create a new TPE.

Thank you on the 'Nova correction, I just goofed that one.

And yes, teams can construct multipiece trades however they see fit. As long as it's legal for all teams involved, the overall trade is legal. So AFAIK this could all be done simultaneously.

I'd be disappointed if the best the Raps could do was Green+25th-29th pick in the draft from Philly. I'd really insist on a Maxey for TD swap or something along those lines, tho they might balk.

That said, Philly looks amazing, and this kind of move makes them the favs in the east imo and a legit contender

I look at Lowry's age and salary and struggle to go past a single 1st rounder. But that is a bias, and an expiring Lowry is worth more than the annual someone pays a 1st for a Trevor Ariza rental.

Still, I don't feel good adding much more than a 1st to Lowry's value. So, I see it as a team with a pick at 18-20 range, as that beats a pick at 25 and a 2nd. But this is a situation where i am happy to be wrong, and a 6 time in a row all star should be worth more than I am saying. I'm just not sold a team gives up 2 1sts, even if the outgoing salary is someone like Prince (2 years and meh on court).

+1

Raps traded Valanciunas, Delon Wright and a 2RP

So... solid young starter and decent prospect

I could see a team that needs an upgrade at either Guard spot doing the deal..

BK: Dinwiddie, Prince, Kurucs, Protected FRP
Heat: Iggy, Olynyk, Nunn
76ers: Danny, Ferguson, Scott, Thybulle, Protected FRP
Mavs: James Johnson, Powell, Brunson, Protected FRP
NOP: JJ Reddick, Bledsoe

I prefer keeping lowry until raptors make a decision on siakam. If we are counting on siakam to bounce back this year he is more likely to do so playing with lowry than without.

Lowry for Danny Green + expiring filler (Scott, Ferg, Poirier) + 1st seems like the deal to me.

Lowry/Seth/Simmons/Harris/Embiid closing games would be...hooo boy
