You thought Aaron Gordon in his prime would take 13m a year....

Lot of worse guys getting paid that or more

Denver must be freaking rocky mountain high. He didn't even look that good in his short time there...and gave him a player option....not good.

It is a lot. But while Gordon isn't great, he's exactly the kind of forward that team needs on D if they're going to run Jokic/Murray/MPJ out there. So in principle I totally get that they locked him up.

skeptical he would land this much in the open market.

My feelings on him are pretty well known. I think this is a bad contract. But I'm not surprised by it. I mean Denver signaled to his agent that we are willing to let our non-essential players hold us over a barrel this off-season with the Barton and Green deals.

And this pretty much ensures MPJ isn't extending for anything less than a full max which would be an even bigger disaster for Denver.

He was what we needed when we had full team healthy, we had like best off ratings and good def one in those few games before Injuries started in Denver

They were 19-5 with AG in the lineup and no Murray for most of those games...That's pretty damn good.

I think it's a pretty bad overpay more so because they let the better player (Grant) walk last offseason for less money than what they're now gonna pay Gordon. I get that he fit and they started playing really well when they inserted him in the starting lineup, but you absolutely should be able to replace the kind of role he played for way cheaper than this. The player option is just overkill. Who was really lining up to pay him that contract next offseason?

If Gordon was the #1 option on an average team like the Magic, I’d have said this isn’t too bad. However, as the #4 option on the Nuggets, this isn’t going to be a good, tradable contract.

But for the Nuggets, maybe his tradability isn’t as big an issue. Gordon is a very good defender who fits well with this team. It is also not a surprising number, because the Nuggets have a history of paying the players they commit to, whether they acquire them in trade or in the draft. Hopefully this doesn’t come back to bite them, since they also have a history of being very aware of the luxury tax.

I don't think it's that bad, but Denver will have 4 max/near max contracts.

This was my thinking as well. Grant was a much better option. A full tier higher then him in my book.

except he is living more on his reputation of defense from very early on. he isnt nearly as good as his reputation anymore on defense

No, they didn't let Grant walk. He left Denver for the same amount of money he got in Detroit. Grant didn't want to be the 4th banana.
