He was good last season, but I’d never feel good maxing a guy with his injury history.

ok we can throw out ben to Denver talks forever now. , Hes liability on defense maybe he has clause to make more if he gets first defense or somthing. Denver is set on their core there's no trading MPJ anywhere. Upside there isnt a lot changing parts to be had in Denver. Downside they are what they are.....

Well give Denver credit for spending tons of money. How smart they are spending it remains to be seen, but they are not going cheap while they have an MVP level player so credit to them for that.

But man did agents win every negotiation with them this off-season. Holy cow they got worked.

Denver have given out way too much money this offseason. Everything has to go right for them to not have made a massive mistake

Super nitpick, but I hate the way contracts like this get publicized.

It's a 5 year, $172 million extension unless MPJ is All-NBA (or DPOY, lol) this year.

I hate this for Denver. There’s almost no chance MPJ lives up to that deal.

Not a nitpick at all. It's a very material disclosure. But with twitter character limits and the masses general lack of attention span it's just the way reporting is done now.

I remember when Denver had the reputation of being really cheap.

What a difference a few years make. They must believe they have a contender here.

So next year that's 130m-ish for just the starting 5?

Joker - 34
Murray - 31
MPJ - 28
Gordon - 20
Barton - 15

Count me as not a fan of this deal for Denver. There was no reason to not give it a season to see how his health holds up and if he expands his game.

The reason was to lock him up for 5 years, no options. Maybe not worth it to you, but there's a clear reason for it.

They could offer him exactly this deal at the end of the season though, right? The timing here, as with Murray's deal, treats the player like he's doing them a favor by agreeing to sign for the max, and neither player had the kind of track record to suggest that's true.

I really love Denver anteing up to maximise their shot at a championship while they have an MVP in his prime, but there's no reason to combine free spending with locking themselves into guys before they really have to.

Of course talks on the Suns forum are his contract and Bridges pending one. I said I'd rather have Bridges but then get rebuttals that Porter is on another tier.

I know Porter was originally the top prospect in the Luka, Trae, Ayton class and compared to KD, so he has enormous upside, but off one really good season, I am a bit surprised he got the max.

Bridges will want north of 25 mill now i think...

If I were Bridges I'd take a deal starting at maybe 27/28 now, just to lock in financial security, but he's one slightly improved season away from getting a near-max offer from someone.

if he plays well before the break im sure he will ask about it.. At least his agent will.
