Offseason Grades - Denver Nuggets

Post#1 » by bondom34 » Sat Oct 2, 2021 2:32 am

And with this we've only got the SE division left.

K_Chile22's offseason grade:

Denver Nuggets transactions

Front office
none

Draft
Drafted Nah'shon Hyland at #26.

Trades
none

Free agency
Re-signed Will Barton to 2/$32M.
Re-signed JaMychal Green to 2/$17M.
Re-signed Austin Rivers to 1/min.
Signed Jeff Green to 2/$10M.
Extended Aaron Gordon, 4/$92M.
Extended MPJ 5/$207M

Offseason Thoughts
Hyland was solid at 26. Barton and Ja Green deals are ok. Like grabbing Jeff Green and keeping Rivers. The Gordon extension is blah. Don't dislike it but don't like it either. MPJ deal just seems like taking unnecessary risk. He's been really good, but not good enough you should be that worried about him demand a fifth-year option, plus the injury concerns, so I don't love it for them. On the aggregate, however, great that they're willing to pay, and they get credit for that.

Grade
B. None of the deals stand out as really great, but encouraging off-season from ownership

Offseason Thoughts
Bones Hyland is a fun pick, bringing the band back is a good move, and landing Jeff Green is potentially very underrated depending on how they use him. They could've used one more guard to hold them over til Murray gets fully healthy and one more POA defending wing but that's what a future JaMychal Green trade is for.

Grade
B+
I really liked the offseason and I am mostly just splitting hairs.

Offseason Thoughts
This felt somewhat like a traditional Denver offseason. They brought back their guys on slight overpays in free agency and the rest was semi-quiet.

Hyland seemed reasonable where he was drafted, and the Jeff Green pickup could be nice if he plays like any version of Jeff Green not on the Utah Jazz as a combo forward or small ball center. The money for Barton is a bit much, and I hadn't dug into his numbers much but the same might apply to Green. I feel the exact same for Gordon though I'm probably a touch higher on him than most, I don't think it's an unreasonable contract for him even if maybe a small touch high. In a league where the cap is ~$120M+ paying a 4th guy a little over 20% of the cap seems fine. And Rivers on the min isn't bad either.

Updated late to add MPJ's extension. It fits in line with the rest. I do think if he's healthy he'd get this offer, but I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with it either. That said it's on ownership and not like they had a better spot to spend the money.

Grade
B, nothing great, nothing bad and they're waiting the year out to see how Murray returns.

Few explanations:

Re-signed Will Barton to 2/$32M.
- Will Barton's deal was initially reported 2/$32M. $2M are unlikely incentives so deal reported on Hoopshype/Sportac is 2/$30M, and declining 2021/22 -$15,625,000, 2022/23 -$14,375,000. This make it better money vise and tradable next year if they need to do it or opportunity arrives. They give themselves time to see if Bones/PJ Dozier can replace him in starting lineup. Better then initially reported.

Extended Aaron Gordon, 4/$92M.
- Aaron Gordon's deal was initially reported 4/$92M. $4.2M are unlikely incentives (all-star, all-nba, all-defense selections) and deal reported on Hoopshype/Sportac is 4/$86.6M. Last year is PO which make it hard to trade.

Extended Michael Porter Jr, 5/$172M (up to $207M)
- Only $12M of $39.3M in year 5 is guarantied based on all-star, all-nba selections, so deal is in worst case scenario 5/$145M, that can go up to 5/$172M (or up to $207M). Again better then initially reported.
