Washington trades: Davis Bertans, Rui Hachimura
Washington Wizards receive: Derrick Favors, Kent Bazemore, 2022 PHX 1st*
It seems pretty clear that Washington is going to move some of its front-court depth, and this starts that process. Bertans is easily the guy they'd most like to move, and Rui has not played this season. They move off of Bertans and get a center who enables them to send out Thomas Bryant and/or Montrezl Harrell in a subsequent deal. They also get a first round pick as compensation for moving Rui as part of the deal.

LA Lakers trade: Talen Horton-Tucker, DeAndre Jordan, Kent Bazemore, Rajon Rondo
LA Lakers receive: Davis Bertans, Kenrich Williams, Ty Jerome
The Lakers move a promising young player for guys who can space the court. Bertans can go back to shooting seven threes a game, and Williams should be a really nice linking piece who does a bit of everything.

The Thunder move their veterans for young guys who can still contribute in the rotation. I think THT and Rui both have potential greater than the late first they send out, and they aren't receiving any particularly bad money.

Sorry to be a downer here but I’m not at all a fan for OKC. I don’t personally like THT much, Ty counts SGA as his biggest fan (this part I’m meh on) and I don’t want OKC to pay Rui, and we have three other 4 prospects that I don’t think are starters on a chip team

I do like it for LA though.

If Presti wants to move up a bit in the 2022 draft to get a certain player, having the Phoenix 2022 to use would be nice.


This proposed trade runs counter to what I expect from OKC.

I think Lakers are at a wall, they didn't pay Caruso 8m a season because of luxury salary concerns. I don't think they go more into tax for this.

I think Lakers are at a wall, they didn't pay Caruso 8m a season because of luxury salary concerns. I don't think they go more into tax for this.

Ah, whoops, sent one to Washington and one to OKC. But yes, if there are salary concerns this isn't going to happen. But was Caruso because of tax concerns, or because they felt like they could get a similar caliber player cheaper? I realize that's *kind of* a luxury tax concern, but not entirely.

They claim tax concerns. They didn't get any player for Caruso's role, maybe Avery Bradley but he was a very late addition.
I think the ownership are pretty tight with funding, they aren't as well off as other owners even though Lakers do very well.

In any case, if they get desperate they might try a trade like this though Bertans doesn't feel like the right fit. They'd be after a defensive big or rebounding that can step out to 3. Love or Muscala is closer. I think Love buyout would be ideal for them.

Love and Muscala are defensive bigs that can step out to 3? Love does not seem to be heading for a buyout, and OKC isn't going to move Muscala. The thing that probably makes the most sense for LA is just to sign Meyers Leonard and attach a pick to some of their depth (they only have their 2027 1st) to add some shooting on the perimeter. They also signed Nunn, they could have just as easily kept Caruso and gotten some younger players than Bazemore/Jordan who were going to be owed less to make up most of the difference. I don't think tax concerns was a legitimate reason to give up on Caruso if you were going to turn around and use the TPMLE.

Nah neither are defensive but both are rebounding bigs. Bertans is not.

Yeah, Meyers is probably i great get for them.

Nunn was a good deal, I think they take that because of value. It wasn't just this year they were thinking of. Caruso wanted 4/32 or something. I mean, I think they are crazy for picking THT over Caruso. I'd do Nunn and Caruso all day.

Rui isn't getting attached to dump bertans. No thanks.

The Wizards would probably like to dump Bertans, but it's not really a high priority. They can avoid the luxtax next summer and keep the core of their team intact with or without Bertans. They definitely aren't giving away Rui to make it happen.

And they absolutely do not want or need Favors and his $10M salary obligation next year when they already have Gafford, Bryant and Harrell. (They'll have the luxtax room to keep one of Bryant/Harrell.)

I think the Wizards will be patient with Bertans. He is in a horrific slump right now so the cost to move him is high. If he gets back to his old form, the Wizards will probably try and quietly shop him, but there's no hurry. Luxtax issues don't really become a problem until Summer 2023 when Rui is up for a new deal, Gafford's new contract kicks in, and the Wizards have to retain or replace KCP.
