Mavs/Sixers/Kings/Cavs blockbuster

Post#1 » by KhalilS » Fri Jan 14, 2022 12:07 pm

Kings are looking to improve for playoffs push, it's risky to deal picks at this stage, they are also ready to move on from Buddy Hield.
Sixers reportedly are looking to unload both Simmons and Harris for expirings + picks to make a push for the bearded whale in Brooklyn, they also want to duck tax and reset repeater tax.
Mavs want to improve defense and get another scorer, their team's ceiling is very limited.
Cavs want shooting and a PG to replace Rubio.

Mavs trade:
KP, THJ, Powell, Bullock, Brunson, WCS, SBrown 25 1st, 27 1st, 2nds galore. (82 millions)
Mavs receive:
Simmons, Harris, Hield, Sexton (98 millions)
Mavs get a second star, second ballhandler, and defensive specialist in Simmons, 2 scorers in Harris and Sexton, a shooter in Hield

Kings trade:
Bagley, Thompson, Hield (43 million )
Kings receive:
KP, Powell, Bullock (53 million)

Kings get KP scoring and rim protection, which they severely lack, Bullock a defensive wing, and Powell for backup center, KP/Powell extra salary they are paying is offset by unloading Hield's extra salary, KP/Holmes frontcourt punch is interesting.

Cavs trade:
Rubio, Sexton, Rockers 2nd, Spurs 2nd, Cavs 22 1st (23)
Cavs get:
THJ + Brunson + Brown (25 million)
Cavs get a scoring wing, and backup PG who can also start next to Garlad, who also happens to be good shooter, another 5th wing in depth chart.

Sixers trade:
Simmons + Harris (68 million)
Sixer get:
Mavs 25 1st, 27 1st, Cavs 22 1st, Spurs 2nd, Rockets 2nd, Mavs 2nds
Expirings: Rubio, Thompson, Bagley, WCS (41 million)

Mavs depth chart:
Simmons/Boban/Brown
Harris/Maxi
Luka/DFS/Brown
Heild/Green
Sexton/Dragic

Kings depth chart
Holems/Powell/Len
KP/Metu
Barnes/Davis
Hali
Fox/Mitchell

Cavs depth chart
Allen
Markennen/Love
Mobely/Cedi
THJ/Brown
Garland/Brunson

Sixers carry on the same, replace Harris minutes with Bagley

Find me a destination where you can trade KP/Powell for expirings to send to Sixers and it would still make sense for the other team financially, and I'll do it :-D

i think this is an overpay by CLE. The money they're taking on for Hardaway could be given to Sexton (who's 7 years younger) this offseason for probably more efficient production. The benefit to them is Hardaway's availability this season, which isn't worth all those picks. Also, CLE still has Okoro.

You forgot Brunson in this deal.

He's a UFA. I doubt he sticks around without a realistic path to a starting spot.

My biggest issue with the depth chart is that its yet another time players are just thrown out of position to make it look good. In reality its more like

Luka, Simmons, Dragic, Sexton
Hield, green
dfs, brown
harris, maxi
Boban, brown

Do great at pg, probably best in league. Pretty bad at sg, but possible to maybe give a guy like sexton minutes there. Worse at sf, and no depth since neither the pfs or sgs really can play there. PF looks great. At center its horrible, 2 centers that shouldnt get 10 min each/ game.

So kinda comes down to what u can do with the 3 open roster spots. A 1 and 2 center, and a bullock replacement that is great defensively and can shoot 3s? Then this team is great.

But from mavs pov, I dont think im against it. Woulf have prefered to somehow keep thj and not get hield, but... Just so many pieces and teams that i cant see it realisticly, but guess mavs would have to do it even tho i hate trading firsts and lock us in with this team for like 5-7 years

I agree tho that simmons should play center if playing with mavs, but its not realistic since kidd doesnt even play kp at center where he is at his best

I really like Brunson but he’s a free agent this summer and he would be the backup PG on this team. So some other team will offer him more money and a better role than we’re willing to, which would make him a rental. Don’t like Hardaway much. So this is a pass.

This not being true would seem to be an obstacle.

To be able to match you need his bird rights, same story with Sexton, both aren't guys you build around, but compliment as 3rd option, both aren't MLE players, Brunson is more of a PG, Sexton is more of a scorer.

THJ out Hield in allows more salary to come in.
Luka is the lead ball handler and disrebuter, but he's more of a SF/PF on defense, no one puts Luka on small quick guards.

Why not? It's one year and then Love comes off the books.

I guess i should phrase it as is it worth going into the tax for brunson? i personally wouldnt since they are nowhere close to being a contender (yet). They could have a lot of capspace when love expire as it currently stands too

They are at 106 next year, THJ + Brunson would cost 30-35 (THJ is front loaded), still below tax with MLE to spend, the year after Love is off the books.
If they extend Sexton alone he should cost ~25 mils.

The point is that we wouldn’t want to match what other teams are willing to offer. Again, he would be a backup PG here. We already paid Allen. We’re going to have to pay Garland soon. And once Love comes off the books in 2023, we’ll actually have a good amount of cap space. I’m not interested in forgoing that to pay big money to Brunson when we already have Garland. We need wings, not another point guard.

And for the record I don’t want to pay Sexton either because I don’t think he fits here so I’d still want to explore a trade if possible. If not, I’m cool letting him just walk.

Maybe if he signed the extension prior to getting injured but I think he tops out at $20 at most right now. I mean maybe someone will end up tossing $25 mil RFA contract, but I don't know who will.

So, tbrow away this year and the next, let Sexton walk, to have cap space 2 years from now?
Even if this isn't the trade for the Cavs (and it isn't ideal, they need defensive wing like Bridges, but you can't always get what you want), I think they are better off dealing Rubio's expiring + Sexton + picks for what they need.

Terrible for the Cavs. They will probably deal Rubio's expiring + pick at the deadline. I don't see them doing anything more than that tbh.
