I was reading a few recent articles about how the Knicks could go after SGA after striking out on Donovan Mitchell.

What would a Knicks trade package for SGA look like?

I could see OKC wanting IQ and RJ.

Knicks get SGA
Brunson, SGA, Fournier, Randle, Mitch -- McBride, Grimes, Reddish, Obi, Hartenstein

OKC get Rose, RJ, IQ, 4x FRP
IQ, Dort, RJ, Giddey, Holmgren -- Rose, Jalen, Dieng, Kenrich, Muscala

I've had the same thought myself, but I dont think the knicks could offer anything that okc would want. Trading for sga is tough. Older stars don't fit their timeline and no rebuilding team is trading a super talented young player for sga either cos it won't fit their timeline. Sga is an amazing player, but trading for him is tough becuase of the multiple considerations

He's 24 and locked up. Why would OKC be inclined to move him? They should be consolidating assets.

Given the NYK lost its battle for Mitchell, I feel a bit sceptical about SGA.

The Knicks will face the same challenges with a SGA trade as they did with the Donnonvan Mithcell trade. The goal is to pair a star (SGA or Mitchell) with Barrett while remaining flexible enough to get a true #1 guy. Realistically that means moving 2 unprotected picks upfront in 23 and 25 and taking the approach that we are 2-3 years away from landing the game changing star, either in cap space or in a all the picks/all the swaps trade.

If we trade Barrett and backloaded future picks, it doesn't really accomplish much.

You also don't know what situations could open down the road for SGA. For example, maybe the small backcourt in CLE doesn't work and the Cavs flip Garland for SGA. Or SGA ends up in CLE in a 3 team trade with Mitchell ending up on the Knicks.

Maybe something like this

Knicks/Thunder

Knicks

Out: Julius Randle, Quentin Grimes Immanuel Quickley, Mavericks 2023 1st round pick, Pistons 2023 1st round pick, Knicks 2025 unprotected 1st round pick, Knicks 2027 unprotected 1st round pick
In:SGA

Thunder

Out: SGA
In: Julius Randle, Quentin Grimes, Immanuel Quickley, Mavericks 2023 1st round pick(top 10 protected0. Pistons 2023 1st round pick(top 18 protected?) ,Knicks 2025 unprotected 1st round pick, Knicks 2027 unprotected 1st round pick

Why the Knicks do this: To gain a true star caliber player on their team. Perhaps this move could set the chain of events that brings in another star/superstar cailber to the Big Apple at some point.

Why the Thunder do this: They do this mainly for draft capital and getting more young players, but they also they can get more out of Julius Randle than what the Knicks got of him last season. If Randle can get back to where he was in 2021, instead of where he was last season, they would able to use him as a trade chip and get additional young players/draft compensation for of him.

If the Knicks get a top 3 pick in the 2023 draft we can revisit the conversation.

NY wanted him. Badly.

We can pretend they didn't so we can once again defend every move they make as the right one, but we aren't fooling anyone so not sure the point of this kind of post in all the Knicks threads?

Not bad enough to blow their wad on a guy that's not a good fit with Brunson, and nobody defending every move they make.
If they wanted him bad enough they would had payed that extorted price and it would had been the Melo situation all over again.
I said many time I wish they had traded for Murry instead of Brunson. Now that they have Brunson at PG it's not to wise to two
small guards and not have a Allen & Mobley as a back stop.

Who knows what really happened behind the scenes. What I can tell you as a Knick fan is that while I am disappointed that we didn't get Donnovan Mitchell, I am also happy that we didn't give up RJ Barrett plus 3 unprotected picks in 24/26/28 along with swaps in 25/27. Where is the below roster going:

Brunson/Mithcell/Reddish/Randle/Robinson
Quickly/Grimes/Fournier/Toppin/Hartstein

This is a fringe #6 seed at best, low end play-in team at worst. No draft capital to trade for the foreseeable future and no cap space to play with. Sometimes trades just aren't worth it. If the Knicks had a true co-star on the roster already, then different story, that's the point where you go out and acquire a guy like Mithcell at all costs.

I thought the below package is what the Knicks should have offered, and it's what I would offer the Thunder for SGA. If they don't accept it, so be it. If it was 3 players and/or 3 picks from other teams to get it done, I would have been ok with it.
Unprotected Knicks picks in 2023 and 2025
Unprotected swap in 2024
2 out of 4 of - Grimes, Toppin, Quickly, Reddish
2 out of 4 of - WAS pick, DAL pick, DET pick, MIL pick

Also - what we are seeing is the challenges of the Knicks plan. It worked in Brooklyn and with the Clippers because they landed game changing stars in free agency. The Knicks roster is very expensive for what it is, even if none of the contracts stand out as horrible in a vacuum.

Not badly enough to meet the price Ainge wanted...and if we're trusting the post-trade reporting over the pre-trade reports, then not even badly enough to match the 3 unprotected FRPs + B-prospect + swaps that cleveland offered; since Ainge said Cleveland made the best offer he got :dontknow:

This FO started their tenure off with a mistake...Obi...and last summer was very disappointing; so I'm certainly not going to argue they always make the right moves. But judging by the price Mitchell went for, I think it's clear that the FO wanted Mitchell "at the right price" rather than "at any price". Which is in keeping with their MO of being patient & opportunistic.

...and I would expect an SGA courtship to go similarly if he wanted out of OKC; see if the offer we can afford to spend on him is the high bid, and if it gets trumped then keep playing the asset management game until someone comes along that they can snag with at the price they want to spend, or it's someone who can be the best player on a title team (read: Zion).

Well, it’s going to cost as much or more than what Jazz got for Mitchell.

In my opinion, NYK don't have anything that seriously interests OKC right now. I'd be mildly interested in RJ, but not for SGA.

Nothing. No point in giving up tons of assets for SGA.

The problem is they're middling assets. For a player like SGA you want a centerpiece.
