Predict the Contract: Kristaps Porzingis
What will Kristaps Porzingis' average salary be on his next contract (assuming he opts out during the 2023 offseason)?
Couple things to keep in mind:
- The 2023-24 salary cap is projected to be $134,000,000
- He'll be 28 when he signs his next contract
- His career earnings are $139,181,582

I don't think he'll opt out, he may get paid a lot of money per year on a new deal, but he isn't getting a long term deal, so he'll cash in the 36 millions he's owed.

If he keeps his level of play up and stays healthy, I would not at all be surprised if he opts out.
Besides, the poll assumes he does opt so what say you?

JJJ type of deal, 25-27/yr, 4 year, last year partial guarantee, deal will have incentives of games played.
He's playing same level he played in DAL, he's just healthy, his advanced stats even say he got worse defensively, DAL tried to unload him w/o success, I think they took a bad deal, but an expiring and lottery protected 1st was his ball park in terms of value.

Re: Predict the Contract: Kristaps Porzingis
This is really tough. He's had very few seasons of full health. In Dallas I tended to see him healthy and in-form for 1/3 of the time, playing but limited and ineffective for 1/3 of the time, and out injured 1/3 of the time. You just can't pay a guy like that too much.
One fully effective season in Washington would look a lot better, but even then how much do you trust him to be healthy and in-form going forward?

4 years and $120 million the last two are non-guaranteed; only takes one team, desperate for talent, who thinks either the juice is worth the squeeze or that they can manage his injuries.
Is he Anthony Davis or Kawhi Leonard or Gordon Hayward on the slow roll down, MPJ and just scary, we talking Ilgauskas or Embiid etc. who were injured a lot due to a structural issue that was resolved?
I think you can talk yourself into anything from he’s completely fox and and run, to, if he’s healthy for a playoff run he can drive to a chip.

Re: Predict the Contract: Kristaps Porzingis
4yrs, $30mil/yr feels close, especially if the 4th year has a partial guarantee or team option. Between cap inflation making that the new $25mil and Washington not really having a plan b while still trying to compete with Beal, as well as Zinger’s solid play their hand may be forced. It’d probably be decent for both sides too.
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.

If he plays +60 games, I could see him getting a 4/120M deal, where the last year has only 10M guaranteed, which gets guaranteed, if he plays 60 games on average over the first 3 years.

So prwtty much same as in mavs, while playing the same, but then it was the worst contract in the league according to many here

a) he's playing better than he did on the mavs
b) cap went up since his contract w/ the mavs so he's technically earning less (as a % of the salary cap) than back then

He's the same player he was in DAL, team impact wise, he's winning 50% of his games, which is what he did in DAL when Luka was out.
He's a good player when healthy, but not a max player.

It’ll immediately become a bad contract the moment it is signed. It only takes 1 GM to do it, the other 29 don’t have to agree.

And, the Wiz have a long history of overpaying their own players when everyone who knows anything is going 'too much! too much!" and then regretting it for years. Think Juwan Howard, Gil Arenas, Andre Blatche, John Wall, Brad Beal? and many many more.

He's playing extremely well but we know his issue has always been health. I think some team will take a chance on a short deal like 90m/3 years.

Too much, whatever it is he will never earn it.

Re: Predict the Contract: Kristaps Porzingis
Am I the only one who sees a lot of Brook Lopez in Porzingis? Early in Lopez's career, he was the best player on a bad team and struggled to stay healthy. Later in his career, he has excelled as a 25-30 MPG guy/4th option protecting the rim and hitting 3's.s
I see KP opting into his deal next year, and then signing a 4 year, $60MM deal, or something in that ballpark. There aren't a lot of teams that can afford to pay their 4th best player more than this and if KP is more than your 4th best player your not a contender.
