UTA/BOS - Getting Boston under the 2nd apron.

Post#1 » by stitches » Thu Jun 29, 2023 6:23 pm

The trade:

UTA gets Malcolm Brogdon and BOS 2024 1st round pick
BOS gets Jordan Clarkson

Why for the Jazz: The Jazz clear up some redundancy in skillsets and add a more of a facilitator on the roster and they get a 1st round pick as compensation for difference in quality and for bringing Boston under the 2nd apron.
Why for the Celtics: They get under the 2nd apron and they get a certified 6th man type to lead their second unit.

Thoughts?

Disagree with you on the difference in quality piece. Brogdon is obviously a better player than Clarkson. But, Clarkson is cheaper, currently healthy, more historically durable and Utah has no need for a second year on Brogdon's deal. So I agree that this is the value they would need/want to make a deal.

If Clarkson would do a 1 year extension off his current salary as part of the trade then BOS saves about $7M/year. That makes the difference for them in ducking the 2nd apron this year and next. So I can see them being willing to give a pick like this if they don't plan on going over.

Just had a very similar idea posted on the Boston board, though it had Olynyk to Boston and a min salary back to Utah. Could also be Payton Pritchard back to Utah, which would lead to some actual cost savings.

Agree with much of what HPF is saying above. Brogdon's probably a good bit better but it's trading quality for depth and reliability.

Other variation

Clarkson, Olynyk to Boston
Brogdon, Payton Pritchard, BOS '24 #1 to Utah

Kind of like that move for both teams, though KO could go or stay depending on how much PF the Boston big group could cover at that point.

Edit: took Champagnie out of it, makes it almost exactly $ neutral (so I think this is the only legal trade in the new CBA lol).

Celtics right now are $9,225,580 below the 2nd apron with 11 players signed:

White / Pritchard
Brown / Brogdon
Tatum / Hauser
Porzingis / Horford / Champagnie
RWilliams / Kornet

If they sign 2nd rounder Jordan Walsh to a rookie minimum deal, last year's 2nd round pick JD Davison to a minimum deal, use the tax payers MLE ($5M) and one vet min player then that's going to put them less than $1M over the 2nd apron.

They could duck the 2nd apron by just keeping the 15th roster spot open and signing a guy mid year to a pro rated deal vs. filling that spot all year (sign 10 days if they need emergency depth). They aren't going to be desperate to give up a pick to dump the tax. I think they only trade Brogdon if they actually like the return.

Yeah, I meant more of a quality of the asset. IMO Clarkson is more valuable on his contract than Brogdon is on his.

Yeah... some variations of those might be workable. Lets see if the teams agree in the next weeks...

With the version I posted above, they can just sign Javonte Green and one of Davison or Yam for 3rd string guard.

White / Clarkson / Yam or Davison
Brown / Hauser
Tatum / Javonte Green
Porzingis / Horford / Champagnie
RWilliams / Olynyk / Kornet / Blake G.

Might be my preferred move out there at this point, though the bigs might be a little less mobile than one might like for the amount of time they may spend at PF being the real caveat. No need to use the MLE in this instance. Also if they need to save money they have the two new players acquired above expiring, or can re-sign to a new workable deal with bird rights.

Maybe this is a good last resort deal if all other options don't pan out.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

i thought we are under the 2nd apron. Regardless you don't pay to downgrade.

Can’t team wait until trade deadline to get under the second apron? Make more sense do it then .

Harder to cut salary then, teams usually don't carry cap space into the season.

Probably will need to pay abit more but usually only those that can duck the tax or similar will make move at the deadline.

The benefits of waiting
- move anyone that is expiring and injured
- try to tweak the team if not performing well
- move to shore other weak spot if there are players having breakout season .

The benefit of doing now
- might be cheaper as team try to get to 90% salary.

I guess Boston pass on this. Should be easy to downgrade from Brogdon to a cheaper player if he is minimally heatlhy. If he can't play all year, I guess the OP is a good solution
