MemPhi's keeps it going

Phi out: Covington, '24 NYK 2nd, 3m cash
Phi in: Oladipo

Why? Philly gets halfway under the tax and can pretend they might bring Oladipo back to pair with maxey and replace the currently better Melton next year. Its a shave 2.2m move.

Memphis out: Oladipo
Memphis in: Covington, '24 NYK 2nd, 3m cash

Why? Get a late 2nd and more cash than it costs. In theory Covington could help next year on a much smaller contract. But its an asset grab for 2.2m of salary intake, which is prorated less than half that. (Probably should be 1.5m cash not 3m)

Just no way we have the roster spots to actually draft that pick. We likely already trying to lineup trades to dump the 2024 2nds we just got for Adams. So the question is can we sell that pick for enough money to justify the money here (or use it to move up). Is Oladipo's salary covered by insurance? If so the real money is even wider here.

Furkan into our Brooks TPE for some future 2nds is the more likely trade here.

edit... Or maybe a salary dump combined with a player Philly could use like Tillman or Konchar? Something like Olidipo/Tillman for Furk/Cov and enough 2nds or some kind of future protected 1st swap. Get all the way out of the tax and a rotation player.

If it's just to shave 2.2M then isn't the 3M cash enough on its own

All I know is I saw the OP and said well no way Memphis can turn this down, and then.... :D

I didn't turn it down. I just asked if this is the best Memphis can do with Olidipo. If his salary covered by insurance then does the money make sense here? Memphis finds itself with the ability to take on quite a bit of salary now without tax concerns this year. Eating a bigger deal with more incentives for Olidiopo or using the Brooks or Adams TPE seems like avenues we would rather explore first. But if the money works out and nothing better comes along then it is a very viable trade.

Couldn’t Covington eat more salary than Olapido?
If the goal is being able to take on more, then here you gain flexibility

Is Cov's salary covered by insurance? If Oladipo is covered then 80% of his remaining real money is covered... so something like like 1 million more this season (80% of 10m/2). While Cov is somewhere around 5-6 million remaining. So 3 million in cash and a 2nd that is maybe worth 1 million or so is basically a wash on money when looking at pure money. Teams usually don't help teams dump salary at a wash especially by helping that tax team reduce their tax which in turns decreases the amount of rev sharing the team receives back.

I just think Memphis has a lot of ways to fully take Philly out of the tax and offer cheap deep rotation guys too if wanted. The OP trade is not the most likely trade I see between these two teams, but still a viable trade like I mentioned before if nothing better comes along.

Oladipo +7.5million is likely enough to match most dumps needed here.

I would do this. I think we waive either of VO or Cov and sign GG so getting an asset, even one as bad as the NYK 2nd this draft, is better than nothing. Of course you always see if there is something better out there, but you do this with no hesitation if this is the best offer on the table.

Would it be more sense to send D.Rose instead of VO? We would save 3m next year.

That makes it less attractive to Philly, who seem to want max cap space.

If I remember correctly, I think DR has a team option the Grizzlies can use in the offseason to drop him from the roster. Especially with his history of injuries. This season hasn't been any different from the past for him.

I hope you are right. Any link to that information?

Just checked. Was wrong. It's fully guaranteed.
