Is it Smart to ride a Ferrari in Texas? Mavs/BK/Grizzles

Post#1 » by Mavrelous » Thu Feb 8, 2024 10:22 am

Mavs Send:
THJ
Holmes
Exum
26 1st/28/1st/30 1st/25 TOR 2nd/Future 2nd
26 1st will have special wording (conveys only if 24 1st, which should be certain by now).
28 1st unprotected
30 1st is the lowest of Spurs and Mavs 1st.

Mavs Receive:
Smart
DFS
29 Mavs 1st from Brooklyn

Mavs go all in: Smart provides leadership, experience and backup guard duties, a great vet to have around for a team with suspect leadership both in players and coach.
DFS provides the missing 3&D.

Kyrie/Hardy/Seth
Smart/Green
Luka/DJJ/Omax
DFS/Grant Williams/Morris
Lively/Kleber/Powell

A good mixture of vets and young guys, capable of good defense and offense.

Brooklyn Sends:
Dinwiddie
DFS
Mavs 29 1st

Brooklyn Receives:
THJ
Exum
28 1st unprotected (to replace the 29 1st)
30 1st, future 1st to use on trades after they fill their roster in 25 FA.
Future 2nd

Brooklyn gets a very underpaid PG who is injury prone, a scorer in THJ and Holmes as a salary filler, additional 1st and a 2nd.
All contracts expire next year.

Grizzlies send:
Smart

Grizzlies Recieve:
Dinwiddie
26 1st unprotected
25 TOR 2nd

Grizzlies move on from the Smart trade, clear cap space next year, recoup the value lost (26 1st = GSW 1st, TOR 2nd less than #25 they gave up).

The Grizzlies value Smart more than FRP. Way more.

I think the values are right and Dallas is pushing in on a final group that can really compete for 3-4 years as long as Lively can be what he looks like he will be..

Seems worth it, you’d hope to put a younger squad around Luka… but Dallas made some poor decisions and hindsight losses over the last 6-8 years.

I think Memphis should get the 2028 first, more upside even though it’s delayed.. Brooklyn getting any future unprotected first for DFS is a great deal for them. but I think the values are overall pretty good.

I dont think Smart is reliable enough for an all in move like this

It's not really unprotected, the pick has swap option, so it's the lowest between Mavs and Spurs.
Brooklyn has to get 28 1st because they are giving up the 29 1st.
We can switch the 30 1st and the 26 1st.

Memphis has no reason to sell Smart. We expect to be a contender next year and Smart to be a big part of it. This doesn’t give us cap space and we have enough wiggle room now to avoid the tax if we choose to. Just not the direction we would take.
