Why did the Thunder trade an actual pick for a later pick swap?
I get that the Thunder are not bringing multiple first rounders with their young team so assets have to be moved. But this trade is just giving away a pick.

they're giving away a pick with zero upside to be in the top 20 for an unprotected swap that might or might not convey, but is enough years down the road that the Mavs could be very very different (i.e. a Luka trade at any point in the next 4 years)
OKC is stocked enough with picks that they can afford to take that gamble

Some GM’s hoard their picks and end up giving away or giving up prospects that they didn’t or couldn’t develop. And the war chests come and go and no great run is made or sustained.
Some GM’s are proactive and delay assets. Presti is setting the team up to try and draft in the lottery while having three (or four) stars locked up and having one of the best records in the league. They’ll likely do a similar move next season..
Why didn’t OKC cut out Dallas and get Gafford? That’s the one that no one can answer. They still could’ve delayed the 2025 firsts..

Maybe they make a run at Paul George?

Tbh, doesnt okcs rostercrunch start soon? Maybe they just like what they see from their young players and dont want to add young guys that need touches to develop? What actually happens if say okc got 3 picks but 14 players under longterm contract? If they likr their current guys they would be forced to sign the extras to 2ways, no matter where they were picked?

Still a question I can’t answer today. Even if he’s just replacement level.
I think Gafford is better than Jaylin for sure .

Crunch somewhat clear by sending out Micic / Mann / Bertans and another first rounder.
On track for 2 first rounder this season around 10-20 my guess. Both 20-30 picks have been traded away

Yep, not sure what they were thinking, a chance at trading up in 28 >> low level prospect they have 5-6 of them already.

I understand the “chance” to move up. It just seems it should have been 24 for 28 rather than a swap of 28s.
Thunder may get Dallas’ 28 then again they may not.
If not, then they just gave away a 24F for nothing.

It was revealed today that the swap with Dallas is unprotected

If Luka leaves as a FA in two years then Dallas is forced to try to rebuild with very limited assets. It gives the pick top 5 potential. The Knicks get Dallas' pick this year. Then Dallas has their 2025 pick, which will most likely be outside of the lottery. Then Luka has a player option. If Luka stays their 2026 pick is outside of the lottery and Luka is a FA. If Dallas has a roster that Luka doesn't want to stick around with then Dallas' picks in 2027 and 2028 suddenly are potential #1 picks. Their 2029 pick goes to Brooklyn and their 2030 is already in a pick swap with the Spurs.
I believe Dallas could trade their 2025 and 2027 picks next off-season since they will, at that time, own their '25, '26 and '27 picks with a swap in '28 meaning they will still have a FRP. They might be able to add a player with those two picks, but does that move the needle? Kyrie is about to turn 32 and while Washington and Gafford are solid role players they don't push them into contender status. They have Hardaway and Kleber for salary matching and 2 FRPs to trade. What does that get them that improves them enough to entice Luka to stay over a potentially better situation after the '25-'26 season?
