ATL - TOR: DJMurray for #6, #31, BBrown

Let’s say the Raps get the #6 pick in the draft. Would ATL be willing to trade Murray for a package around that?

#6, #31, Bruce Brown
for
Dejounte Murray

Brown can play next to Trae, or he has value as an expiring contract to bring back a future late 1st.

Atlanta was reportedly looking for 2 1sts for Murray. In this case they get a top 6 pick, plus a borderline 1st, plus an asset. I don’t really know what their plans are, but this seems good value on paper.

Toronto can play Quickley and Murray interchangeably as a PG-SG duo.

As a raptors fan, do it. But there are quite a number of folks that see this draft as weak. Not sure this peaks ATL interest. Really do not know.

Add in a top 4 or top 6 protected swap in 2025 , perhaps ?

OP seems light but an unprotected swap seems heavy considering Toronto is in a soft rebuild.

Atlanta doesn't own their 25.

Hawks should jump at this tbh. That's great value.

Meh, if it's the best deal during the offs then sure. That Hawks already own a top ten pick along with the Sac pick in a poor overall draft.

They may very well package one of the their picks to DJM to make the right deal for them.

Neither does Toronto in this hypothetical scenario.

Even in a poor draft there are always all stars.

I guess it depends on if Hawks like a couple guys in the top 10

I think I’d do it as Atlanta. Toronto, on the other hand…I’m not sure about. I don’t love the fit unless you buy Murray’s average 3pt shooting.

What was the point of trading for Quickley if they just do this?

Quickley and DJmurray can play together at the 1 and 2. The point is to also add a POA defender, so that Scottie can be more of a roamer and help defender.

I get your question, but this is different than the Hawks situation. Unlike Trae, Quickley has shown that he can also thrive in an offball shooter role.

The lineup would look something like this:

Quickley / (Murray & Scottie)
DJMurray / Trent / Ochai
Barrett / Gradey / Nwora?
Scottie / (JSmith? via MLE)
Poeltl / Olynyk

Add #17 pick
Add a PF at the MLE (eg JSmith from Indy?)
Trade Boucher for spare parts

The Raps aren’t winning the championship in the next couple of years, so young talent accumulation is the name of the game.

That’s 4 guys who can score 20 points. If you bank on Scottie’s growth into All NBA caliber, this is a respectable young core with lots of future flexibility.

Even in a weak draft, I think the #6 pick is still too much for Murray

I look at that line-up and I see one budding star (Scottie) who might not have a high enough ceiling to be a #1, some average starters, and 2 or 3 middling young prospects. Play-in if healthy, lottery otherwise. For Toronto I think that trade just cements in mediocrity, with really low odds of ever becoming a regular playoff team let alone a contender.

If that's the direction, I don't know why Toronto wouldn't have kept OG and Siakam and try to actually add some guards rather than always adding backup forwards and settling for one of the league's worst guard rotations for 2.5 seasons.

But they've chosen to rebuild. I just don't think DJMurray fits on a team trying to rebuild, so it's nuts to trade for him, especially burning through draft assets in the process.

I have this as overpay by the Raps, but not egregious enough to deter them from pulling the trigger if they like DJM.

Yeah that’s what you’d see at first glance, but look closer.

There is no way to put the Raps into contention right away. The idea is to put a bunch of 2 way youth around Scottie, and have max flexibility. They’d probably be first round fodder next year, which is totally fine.

Scottie, Quickley, Barrett, Gradey are all in their early 20s.
Murray will be 28, which is prime.
After ‘25, they own all their picks plus an extra ‘26 1st rounder.

You can see Barrett being packaged down the line.

This is banking on Scottie as an All NBA player. If that doesn’t pan out, this roster construction is flawed.

if Toronto manages to luck into retaining their pick, I don't see them giving it up for Dejounte.

Playing Murray next to another small guard is just replicating a formula that didn't work. That is a perennial 35 win team.

Quickley and Trae are not the same. This is such a wrong statement. Quickley is taller, heavier, and lengthier than Trae.

Quickley is >25 lb heavier than Trae, with a wingspan of 6’8. He can switch on to most 2 guards in this league.

More importantly, Quickley is actually willing to put in physical work, unlike Trae.
