What will Robert Covington’s average salary be on his next contract (he will be a UFA during the 2024 offseason)?
Couple things to keep in mind:
- The 2024-25 salary cap is projected to be $141,000,000
- He'll be 33 when he signs his next contract
- His career earnings are $90,526,780

I think he's a vet min guy at this point. Would be surprised if he's making more than 5M next season.
I love me some Cov but his best days are behind him and he's had injury issues too.

I’d think he’d be a sneaky good signing for the Kings. I could see Mike Brown using him in a low minute starter role at PF next to Sabonis (similar to what he did with Okpala at the start of the 2023-24 season). He’s got the size/length, defense, rim protection, rebounding, and shooting that you’d be looking for to put next to Sabonis.
Even if the Kings offer Monk the max they can which is $17.4 mil (175% of this year’s salary), they could potentially use part of their MLE to offer a $12-14 mil contract over 2 years (with a team option in year 2) and still stay under the luxury tax. I was hoping that might be high enough to outbid the other suitors.
If Covington works out in year 1, the Kings could pick up his option giving them early bird rights in case they wanted to sign him past the 2 years. If Covington doesn’t work out in year 1, you could not pickup his team option the following year or he gives you another expiring salary to include in a deadline deal.

Kudos to RoCo's agent for voting $19M+

Depends on how he finishes the season out, but certainly a sub-MLE player.
Might be a league minimum guy at this particular moment in time, but that could change it he can get healthy and prove to be an effective rotation piece in the playoffs.

I think he’ll have enough suitors that he can get more than the vet min (if he wants that more than the right situation). I see him as a tax MLE guy

Tax MLE, 5-6/yr on 1+1 setup.

tax mle maybe. Maybe vet min to pick a sweet spot in terms of playing time, location, ring chasing, chance they overpay you in a year.

Vet min. Closer to no contract than $5 mil.
I say this as a huge RoCo fan

I think he’s a vet min. Guy at best. Possibly retiring. Decient 3rd string forward at this point.

I think if he is choosing money, he’ll get a 2year10 mil with a good amount of UNG money. That seems his best realistic contract. Some small role where the team hopes for a bounce back..
If he thinks he can get a step back somehow, maybe stay in Philly on a vet min thinking they’ll give him a 2yr18 with his bird rights the following year..
Would Detroit give him 2yr20 with the second year fully UNG to hopefully be an on court coach? Is that better or worse than some of the other ideas to spend Detroit’s cap space?

This. Most probably...

The guy is getting 16 minutes a game and I don’t think he’s out producing what you can get from a G-League add if you pick the right fit.
Sounds like an easy minimum type guy.

Still a very positive impact even if reduced role if healthy. I think that’s the key. If he is healthy and ready to play I think a team could pay more than 5 million a year for his services.

His advanced impact stats are very good (at least defensively).
D-EPM = +2.6 (97th percentile)
EPM = +0.0 (70th percentile)
D-DPM = +2.2 (16th out of 513)
DPM = +0.5 (103rd out of 513)
D-RAPM = +0.7
RAPM = +0.4
D-RAPTOR = +4.5 (16th out of 540)
RAPTOR = +4.5 (26th out of 540)
Again, I’d definitely be interested in him as a target for the Kings (since he’s a great fit on paper next to Sabonis) and would ask the question…why can’t he be an impactful, low minute starter on a playoff team?
