Washington - Jordan Poole

What will it take for Washington to get rid of Poole?
Any rebuild is going to have to consist of building around Avdija and Coulibaly and whichever top 5 pick the Wizards get.
So short of paying a ransom to move Poole, what is a valid trade option.
Maybe LaVine for Poole (filler) and 25 & 26 FRPs?

They're stuck with him. Washington is very asset poor, and shouldn't be throwing away what little they have to move off of him. Washington's not going anywhere the next year or two with or without him, just play him and start reducing his role if he continues to be the worst featured player in the league.

Washington shouldn’t trade him when his value is at its lowest. Hope he gets hot next year and then trade him.

He's the worst contract in the league, by a healthy margin.
Very few teams in the league can afford to carry 100/3 dead weight contract for the next few years, Wizards happen to be one of them, he's staying there.

Rebuilding teams don't waste picks to clear salary. It makes no sense.
Poole will be on the Wizards until his contract expires, or until he plays well enough to be traded without sacrificing picks.
The only plausible trade would be something like Poole for a completely unplayable player with a shorter contract, like a Lonzo Ball if he was on the books for more salary. But even that isn't going to work at the moment because Poole is so bad himself that he is similarly unplayable. If Poole can get back to where he was at Golden State - a useful albeit overpaid instant offense guy - then maybe he is movable for shorter, bad contracts.

My thoughts with Poole is that if he continues to get worse for the remaining season plus into the next following season, then I see that the Wizards would have no choice but to utilize the stretch provision on Poole's contract(Merely as the last resort). The Pistons had to use this measure on Josh Smith near a decade ago.
If Poole somehow improves his game back to good standing, then I would find a suitor who's willing to take on Poole and run with it.

Yeah this is the long and short of it.

Yeah. Poole isn’t hurting the tank. They have the second worst record in the league and got a decent margin worse at the trade deadline.
Poole can get his minutes cut further once Washington has more youth. Kuzma should be traded though. He’s an asset and Washington should flip him this offseason.
Poole I don’t see an owner willing to take on without value, and I don’t see Washington trading anything to get rid of him.

In that scenario, the Wizards are unlikely to stretch him. They would just cut him.
Stretching is not some kind of magic bullet. It's actually a pretty bad idea for any team that is not actively in the luxtax. Why spread out the final 2 years of his salary over the next 5 years when you can just cut him and be done with him in 2 years? I'd much rather eat his full salary in 2025-26 and 2026-27 and have Poole completely gone by 2027 than have to pay 40% of his annual salary to a ghost in 2027-28, 2028-29 and 2029-30.

The Wizards are in for a multi year tanking situation. I dont see them even trying to be decent for another 2 years and by then he'll be an expiring

Unless they are adding picks with Poole they are stuck with him.

Yep. as many posters noted, the Wizards are stuck with Jordan as tank captain for the foreseeable future.

Poole's contact sucks, but the Wiz have no incentive to give up assets to move him. It's not like they are going to draw a big free agent with cap space to join the beginning of a rebuild.

As others have noted. rebuilding teams like Washington have no incentive to pay to move bad contracts. Poole hurts them less then he would a team that's trying.
Baring a major bounce-back, I'd expect Poole to stay in Washington at least until he's an EC (by that time Washington may be transitioning back to trying and use his contract as EC filler in a deal).

We are not giving up one of our desperately needed 1sts to move Jordan Poole, couple of 2nds, sure though LaVine is worse for us than Poole (better now, worse in the long run due to age assuming they both play well enough in the future to stay in the league). We don't have a cap space issue, we don't have talent to spare, and he's really good (so far) at making us lose thus improving our tank. If he goes on a hot streak to the point where someone is willing to give an asset for him, sure, call us. If not we probably wait until we are starting to put together a competitive team, move him to instant offense off the bench status, and deal him then or let his contract expire.

Realize I’m probably just saying what others have, there is no reason for the Wizards to trade him. They are better off hoping he figures it out. Even if he doesn’t, he’s only got like 3 more seasons on it. He’s fairly healthy and I think he’s 25(?).
There’s really no one on the wizards they have to deal, might want to add a center to develop since Bagley and Holmes both expire after next season.

This is not really true, they have like 10 incoming 2nd round picks in the next 5 years and pick swaps with Phoenix for a while.
J-Poo is doing exactly what Washington hired him for, which is to keep their '24 and '25 first round pick in the protected range to avoid giving it to NYK.

Washington wants/has to develop a culture of competitiveness, accountability and humility in the locker room to progress. Does Poole embody these attributes?
If the answer is no, then this enough reason to cut him loose.
