San Antonio Spurs: Trae Young

Atlanta Hawks get:
3rd Overall Draft Pick via Spurs
'25 Hawks 1st Returned via Spurs
'27 Hawks 1st Returned via Spurs
'26 Hawks Pick Swap Returned via Spurs

Detroit Pistons get:
Keldon Johnson

San Antonio Spurs get:
Trae Young
Quentin Grimes
19th Overall Draft Pick via Hawks

Hawks kickstart a proper rebuild around a top 3 pick and getting their picks returned. Trae is great, but Atlanta has a ceiling so pivoting to a rebuild both financially and picks-wise makes sense.

Pistons add a wing at a reasonable cost to absorb the salary difference in a weak free-agent market.

Spurs get Wemby a legitimate co-star, a solid fit at SG and a top 20 pick.

I think swapping #3 with the Toronto pick + 2025 Chicago pick makes a bit more sense. Consider that with the picks the cost of Trae. Then Keldon for Grimes + 19 feels like fine value, but he may be too redundant for Atlanta. I'd rather see the rest just be filler but the value seems right.

This trade idea has been posted before, but what you wrote is pretty much the consensus. Trae is worth the two picks and swap + 1 more pick just not the Spurs pick. Keeping in mind that those ATL picks are worth more to the Hawks than any other team.

See, I think in such a dry market that Trae for 3 1sts and a swap is a good deal even if one of those 3 1sts is a top 5 pick in a "weaker" draft.

I think Hawks fans will say no, but if the Toronto pick conveys at is like 7, the Atlanta this trade could make a fair bit of sense for the Spurs. I don't think the Spurs should be looking at trading Johnson for Grimes, though I get it's probably a salary dump. I'm not sure the money actually works with the Hawks taking back no salary. I don't know how Detroit would feel about this deal. It seems awfully cheap for them, and Keldon is a good morale boost for a team that seems to have some culture struggles. But I could see them wanting to look elsewhere.

If the Raptors pick doesn't convey, I'd probably want to swap something else, because the team still needs a lotto pick.

I think it gives the Hawks a nice foundation. They would have:

Long-term pieces:
Jalen Johnsonn

Possible long-term pieces:
Onyeka Okongwu
Kobe Bufkin
AJ Griffin

Veterans w/some trade value:
DeJounte Murray
Bogdan Bogdanovic

Veterans w/neutral value, perhaps positive to the right team:
Clint Capela

Slightly negative value:
DeAndre' Hunter

Then picks:

2024: ATL 1st, TOR 1st (1-6 thru 2026), SAC 1st (conveying this year unless Sacramento has a disaster to end the season)
2025: ATL 1st, CHI 1st (1-10, 1-8, 1-8, otherwise 2028 2nd)
2026: ATL 1st
2027: ATL 1st
2028: ATL 1st
2029: ATL 1st
2030: ATL 1st
2031: ATL 1st

Trade Murray for a couple of picks, flip Bogdanovic for a bit of value, find a team that might trade expirings and a protected 1st or some 2nds for Capela, then just eat Hunter's contract who will fit in just fine ... teams could have a worse start to a rebuild.

Agree. Just a question if it’s Toronto’s pick or Chicago’s. Don’t see San Antonio throwing in their pick. Atlanta would probably prefer to have Toronto’s pick instead of Chicago or the Dallas 2030 pick.

Atlanta should bottom out next year. I would go full tear down and build up the war chest.

I think Young to SA makes sense too, for both. Trade Murry, Capela, BB too and start over. Tank the '25 season and have a new team for the '25/26 year-with tons of young talent and open cap space

Young for Jones, Graham (ATL can cut him and save most of his $) plus the #8 pick from Tor, the Chi '25 pick and all the ATL picks back

Or MAYBE SA sends their pick (let's say #3) and ATL sends their pick (#9 let's say). SA would probably still have two mid/late lotto picks to play with, and keep Johnson

I think Garland will be the target if Mitchell says he'll re-sign, and if not him then Mitchell.

Yes, after Young's fail in Atilanta let's ee how can he destroy the Spurs' young foundation.

Young has "failed" in Atlanta? He has been to 3 playoffs, including a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals. Don't blame the teams short comings on Trae when we have an inept front office.

I think that Young is a very talented but ineffective scorer, a creative but lazy passer and a terrible defender. Not a good combination.

As such, his value is probably much lower than Hawks fans (and posters on this board) think.

If Spurs are going all-in win-now, they need to add another win-now player. Ingram, Towns, Mikal, Markkanen (one of the usual suspects). Trae to 3rd worst team in NBA just isn’t enough.

Trae is better than all of those guys, though.

They were saying to add one of those guys to Young, not instead of him.

I'd have little interest in completely leveraging the Spurs for those players, though as I mentioned in a recent Mark thread, I could at least see it. But I'd prefer an older vet who can tie them (and maybe Vassell) together rather than just another player who hasn't gotten it done on a big contract.

The issue is identifying players who'd qualify but are actually obtainable.

Trae's got his obvious defensive issues but some of you are downplaying how good he is. Idk if its b/c he has a punchable face or his hair looks funny but ATL has been a top 10 offense with him for the past 4 seasons. Pairing him with a player like Wemby would do them BOTH some good and be a great foundation for the Spurs to build with.

Stars don't fall out of the sky and the Spurs aren't exactly a free agency destination. They may not be in position to get a player as good as Trae for sometime IF he becomes available this offseason.

The Spurs not being a free agency destination gets overblown. They got the biggest fish in 2015 and 2016 and got Gay to take less to join in 2017. Yes that's a long time ago, but it was the last time they seriously tried to play the market. Players wanted to play with Kawhi, and they want to play with Wembanyama. The Spurs saddled themselves with the Colilns contract. But if they had a max slot open, I'd be in the running for a lot of these free agents.

Ah, I misunderstood. I'd love Bridges next to Trae. Trae-Bridges-Vassell-Sochan-Wemby should be nasty.

Wemby with Trae would be cray cray.

Spurs become a legit contender overnight.
