Eastern Conference - Your Team Gets Eliminated Round 1: What Happens Next?

Post#1 » by NYG » Sun Mar 3, 2024 11:25 pm

Let's say your Eastern Conference team gets bounced Round 1 of the playoffs (or earlier for some teams)... how would the stars and management react?

Celtics
Cavaliers
Bucks
Knicks
76ers
Heat
Magic
Pacers
Bulls
Hawks

The most interesting outcomes to me here are Donovan Mitchell, Joel Embiid and Pascal Siakam

Cavaliers more than likely make some serious changes to their team. Who gets sent out depends entirely on whether or not Mitchell agrees to commit long-term to Cleveland.

For Indy, I think it’s mostly just “well, we’d hoped to do better, but awesome that we made such a huge stride!” And just keep chugging along? I’d think that Siakam would probably understand where this team was, and where it’s potentially heading?

Philly is the only Siakam threat IMO

IF the Bulls get into the play in and hit it just right to make the 1st round only to lose

as teams E & W get eliminated look at who are coaching change candidates, GMs who might be on the hot seat. When teams change either, they make trades.

Which teams get eliminated sooner than they expected due to a lack of scoring especially young teams. Those are the candidates for DeRozan S&T and maybe Lavine.
Which teams lost due to a lack of scoring in the paint that's who they might look to be interested in Vucevic.
Which teams got hammered on the boards and would think Andre Drummond changes that for them.
Which teams lost because they came up short defensively, probably off the bench and closing out the game, who sees Alex Caruso as making up for that problem

The DeRozan team is the one I struggle to find... maybe Detroit just signs him?

Lowkey I am curious about Boston because I don't think Brad Stevens will be ready to just run it back after another playoff choke.
I assume Mazzulla's seat becomes scorching hot if they somehow lose in the 1st round, especially with Bud available and unemployed.

Of course. He was traded to Indiana because that’s where he wanted to be once it was clear the Raptors were moving forward without him. Ty probably hasn’t fully recovered from his injury. It isn’t about this season for him or them but more about the next 4 years.

Well we discussed it already, win or lose, we would move heaven or earth to sign Grayson or Monk while our expirings expire.

All the while developing our young guys in Paolo, Franz, Suggs, Black and Jett..

Yeah. Really seems like Tyrese should be resting right now, but he’s also trying to not miss too many games to miss out on All NBA eligibility. It’s a rough rule that’s probably hurting the club a bit right now?

Maybe. I think any team with cap space should at least make a play for him. Though obviously, I hope he’s locked into the Pacers.

This. And I think Brown gets floated. Brown+ for Trae + Capela makes a lot of sense. And no, I am not worried about Trae and Tatum figuring it out.

I don't think there's any reason Mitchell would want to go to Orlando?

If Mitchell asks to be moved, he'll probably ask to be moved to the Heat, Nets, or Spurs in that order.

Orlando is a good team and even if they trade Franz Wagner for Mitchell, they still have a ton of pieces, but they're just less interesting than those other three teams.

Realistically, ORL should root for Mitchell to commit to CLE and maybe they move Garland. I wouldn't want ORL to have the same flight risk concerns CLE is presently facing. If Mobley doesn't start melding better with Allen - we'll take one of them off your hands too

Admittedly, ORL doesn't have (much of) the win-now pieces that CLE would surely want for Garland- but maybe a 3-way as ORL has picks and cap space to work with. Have to assume Franz and Paolo not on the table, so likely need a 3rd party. Hoping, but certainly not betting on it.

Speaking for the Knicks -- it all depends on circumstance.

If our guys are injured and we lose to a quality opponent - then it's no big deal at all, keep the train moving.
If Randle and Brunson are healthy and Randle puts out a dud despite finishing the regular season with good play in a sustainable way (like not that was just hitting an inordinate amount of 3's) then we have a problem. Ultimately our team was not built to win it all this year so it won't do too much to us.

Win or lose round 1, I expect Weltman to trade the 2nd round pick for cash considerations.

but really the Magic should be looking for a guard upgrade regardless of what happens in the play offs.
