MIN-UTA-ORL

Jazz get: Timberwolves 2029 pick (top 5 protection removed), Timberwolves 2030 pick, Timberwolves 2031 pick, Anthony Black, Wendell Carter Jr.
Timberwolves get: Lauri Markkanen, Collin Sexton
Magic get: KAT

Why for Utah: Allows them to tank in 2025 and 2026 for a chance at a superstar, gets them a really good guard prospect in Black, and gets them three high variance picks that could be very good.

Why for Minnesota: Replace KAT with a guy very similar, add a ton of bench scoring, and get under the second apron.

Why for the Magic: Add a ton of shooting and offense to their offensively challenged roster.

Don’t think Minnesota takes Lauri’s contract risk here, without factoring in the extra picks they add.. it’s really one one pick and one swap, and a pick protection drop.. But still.. Lauri leaves Minnesota next offseason and they’re capped out with no picks to move. Seems a great coin flip for Utah and a bad one for Minnesota

Maybe once Lauri trade eligible in 10-16 months.

Unless Minnesota knows something about KAT, I don’t see them trading in for Black and WCJ. Value seems pretty questionable there

I like the concept.

It would have to be after Markkanen renegotiates and extends (when can he be traded after?).

And I don’t think Magic would be right team for Towns.

3rd team: Towns

Jazz: 3rd team assets + new Wolves picks detailed in OP

Wolves: Markkanen

I guess question becomes, why doesn’t 3rd team just trade for Markkanen?

KAT would cost the magic a hell of a lot more than just Carter and Black. They are stealing value in this trade.

Black and 2 1sts doesn't feel like a package for Lauri.

Once the wolves resign Markkanen, they are back in salary trouble. And brining in Black, what does that mean for George?
What are Magic giving up to get KAT?

No offense to KAT but I don't really think he's the right target for the Magic. If we decided to make a change at C it should almost be the opposite direction with a more defensively minded player coupled with upgrading the offensive capability at point guard to make up for losing WCJ.

He’s eligible to extend on 28 August and, post-extension, the earliest he could be traded is July 2025.

I'm open to a discussion about Towns, Markannen, and how their values currently stand.

I'm not willing to entertain the idea that the difference between them is essentially 3 unprotected picks.

The deal is illegal as well due to Stepien but that's arguably the least of its issues.

But he isn’t extending, or better said, ‘just extending.’ Isn’t he tearing up old deal, some kind of renegotiate old deal because Jazz have cap space, then a new deal/years on top of it. Is that still July of 2025 trade eligible?

Price is great, but KATs just a terrible fit in ORL. He’s not even on their wish list, imo.

It’s 6 months after the renegotiation. So after the trade deadline. They seem to have changed the wording in the CBA that allowed Turner to be trade eligible directly after doing his extension.

Great. Thanks. So any Markkanen trade has to be expiring Markkanen or not until 2025 offseason.

Yes, and trading an expiring Markannen makes little sense from a value standpoint. The only way I can see it happening is in the perfect scenario where a team this summer sees him as the final piece to a championship and is willing to give up the necessary godfather offer to close the deal. To call that unlikely is putting it mildly.

That’s my understanding.

But a cap space team could trade for him on draft night, then just sit on 13-14 million in cap space (have to stay over the floor now as Scoot explained) until December and do it then.. That would set up plenty of room to give the same type of extension that Sabonis got.

Still enough to get him a contract that hits his max in 2025, unless the cap has an unexpected jump for 2025...

So he’s not a normal expiring to cap space teams. But to cap space teams? Yeah.

Makes sense. So teams who have the remaining cap space after trading for Markkanen who can work a contract as not to lose an expiring Markkanen.

Like…Spurs. If they traded for Trae or Murray or another win-now PG, makes sense to add Markkanen too - renegotiate and retain Markkanen.

Yeah, SAS is a good one definitely. I feel like they will be aggressive this offseason, and Lauri/Matas/Vassell/DJM is an interesting group to put with Victor. But there’s different/better options.

Chet/Lauri/Jalen/SGA/Cason is the best one (imo) but I seem to go back to OKC often. Just rare to have 30 million in cap space and 3 stars.

I had been playing with Brooklyn? You can give Claxton 20-24 mil and then Simmons++ for Lauri almost gets it done. Trade either Dennis or DFS for 3-4 players back to fill out the roster, or just for cap space and sign your own vet mins however you want.. And you lock up Lauri in December, hopefully get “star guard” for CamJ/CamT+ in January..

If the OP wrote this as an IN/OUT, it would be

MIN GIVES: Karl Anthony Towns, 2029 MIN 1st (top 5 prots removed), 2030 MIN 1st (I assume, “swap”), + 2031 MIN 1st (unprotected)
MIN GETS: Lauri and Sexton

.. and trading Towns (who wants to be in MIN) for the risk of Lauri walking? Seems expensive.

I’d also mention that Towns’ becomes trade eligible on June 30th, one year after signing his extension. With the draft being held on June 27th, it’s more likely that win-now MIN would trade the rights to their “Tim Connelly selected” 2024 1st round pick, rather than distant 1sts.

I don’t think a trade is likely for any player, but for discussion’s sake, do you think a Gobert/Mike Conley package fits ORL better?
