Grizz Trade: Top 8 24 1st/25/27 unprotected 1st/Ziaire/Konchar/Laravia/Santi

Grizz Receive-Lauri Markennan/Kris Dunn(sign&trade)/Omer Yurteseven

Jazz add multiple young prospects, also get another lottery pick this year while adding draft capital.

Grizz go all in adding the best Forward available on the market who fits our timeline on the last year of his sweetheart deal. We potentially go into cap hell in 25-26 but the upside is worth the cost. Dunn is another vet who is a great defender and backup pg. Omer adds size and rebounding.

Ja/Des/Smart/Lauri/JJJ

Dunn/Luke/Vince/GG/BC

DRose/Tarik/Lamar/Yuta/Omer

2 Way Pippen/2nd Rd pick/Jemison

I think Utah would have to do this. That has us owning Memphis' drafts through 2030 for an expiring Lauri. If it is later in the year with a renegotiated and extended Lauri, I think it takes this kind of offer for Utah to consider. The question for Memphis needs to be... could they do better than Lauri? I don't see JJJ at center working out (too frail) but Lauri at small forward can, so they'd need to grab a center. IMO Towns feels like a better fit at potentially a lower cost asset-wise.

I also don't think the sign and trade of Dunn is CBA legal since we don't have bird rights, but may be wrong.

Are you saying this happens at the draft?

If I'm reading this correct you're saying: 4 picks (unprotected), three swaps plus Ziare, Santi, Konchar and Laravia.

That's a lot of draft capital to give up for one player.

You “think” Utah would have to do this? This is massive overpay for Markkanen. Compare OP offer for what Cavs paid for Mitchell. And expiring Markkanen doesn’t have Mitchell value.

Yes, I am making the point that it is a massive overpay for an expiring player.

Given were the Grizz are in process for competing for a title this is the move I think we should make. I know it is an overpay. Preferably we would want Lauri on a longer deal, but understanding our picks likely grade out in mid 20’s moving forward I think the risk is worth it.

I'd make that deal if I was Utah. Although the final team assembled by Memphis really looks good, I don't trust the health of Ja, Smart and JJJ; and the West is a bloodbath. Also, Memphis is trading away so much depth, depth that would help them survive injuries to starters. I think there's a pretty good chance that Memphis has some bad seasons down the road due to the injury bug, and those picks end up being pretty decent.

I don't think an expiring Lauri is much of a flight risk tbh. He just started in that Finnish interview he does NOT want to be a journeyman moving from team to team. If he lands in a good situation like Memphis ready to win next season when Ja gets back, there's no reason for him not to resign there especially if they are offering the money he wants. Of course Memphis (or whatever team) would do their homework to make sure he would re-sign in '25 before making a deal for him.

I think Clarke replacing one 2 of the prospects and Memphis still would be the top bidder by a decent bit.

I don't have the players coming back to Utah mattering all that much for this sort of deal, Memphis could mix and match whatever they wanted to make the money work for this kind of pick value. Still probably too much, but I think it's an 'offer you can't refuse' type that will actually get Ainge and crew to do the deal.

Kind of need to spell out the picks.
Plus, swaps have more value to UTA in odd years. Also, reasonable for MEM to add top 4 protection.

Swaps: (all swaps - convert to a 2nd the next year if top 4)
2025 - UTA can swap UTA/CLE/MINN for MEM 1st
2027 - UTA can swap UTA/CLE/MINN/LAL for MEM 1st
2029 - UTA can swap UTA/CLE/MINN for MEM 1st
- by doing it in odd years, UTA is likely to get some value from the swaps - even if MEM is doing well.

1sts:
2024 - 6-8 range (since post-lottery).
2026 - Unprotected.
2028 - Top 4 protected converts to 2030 1st if not conveyed; top 4 protected in 2030, becomes a 2nd)

That is a lot. But, might be worth it. By adding top 4 protection, it keeps it from being a possible doomsday scenario - like this year with BRKN possibly sending HOU the top pick - instead it is like last year when HOU did not have to send the 4th pick to OKC. I do not think it is worth risking top picks for Markky - unless it is very limited.

I would agree with this.

Clarke + Choose a Prospect + #7 (2024 Griz 1st) + 25 Griz 1st (unprotected from year they 100% have Markkanen)

That is starting offer for Markkanen + Filler

Then, what more is needed. I think 2027 with limited protections + 26 Swap.

Deal is done and done.

Yeah, I think if Utah wants all future picks/swaps, they don’t get a top 8 pick. So Memphis could do four future firsts and all their prospects and keep the lottery pick.

Or they give up the lottery pick and add similar to what you suggested.

If they want a volume package, trade the lottery pick for “2-3” future firsts

The only thing I know is, if RealGM is correctly predicting offers for Lauri, be it from Memphis, Detroit, or whatever, Ainge needs to cash the hell out.

Markkanen is fantastic offensive player playing off passes (70+% assisted from 2, 98% assisted from 3), but he’s a meh defender, meh passer, solid but not special rebounder, and as mentioned, doesn’t create much of his own offense. Super useful and valuable, but Utah needs to take one of these big offers.

If this gets it done it would be ideal from a pick standpoint but Grizz are not trading Clarke. Our current Big 3 wants him here and he fills the rim runner role as our 3rd big off the bench.

Perhaps I am in the minority, but the thought that an expiring contract is going to return 7 years of picks is absolutely unfathomable.

I'm there with you. Like I don't control an NBA teams and can't actually determine what they do, but Mark feels more like he'd return a mid-lotto pick from a team like Memphis, Houston or OKC. I do not think he'd get any additional picks outside of token protected picks like those from CHA, POR, DET or WSH.

I mean, Clarke is like 0.0% reason to say no to getting Markkanen.

If Jazz don’t see ‘not getting Clarke’ as deal breaker (laughable statement), then of course Griz can keep him and deliver some other salary filler. Falls in category much more value to you/Griz and very little to Ainge.
