Atlanta and New Orleans: Off-season move

Post#1 » by drosestruts » Thu Apr 4, 2024 8:59 pm

Atlanta in: CJ McCollum and Herb Jones

New Orleans in: Dejounte Murray and Clint Capela

Why for Atlanta:
Hawks add another strong 3&D wing to go along with Johnson and Hunter and open to the way for Okongwu to be their starting center moving forward. Tall, long defensive wings that shoot well are the best compliment to Trae Young and they'll have three very good ones in Jones, Hunter and Johnson.

McCollum provides offensive and can serve as a lead guard when Young sits in a way that should fit better with the team. McCollum has had plenty of success plenty alongside a ball dominant guard in Lillard throughout his career and might be a better on floor compliment with Young than Murray has been.

Young/Bufkin
McCollum/Bogdanovic
Jones/Hunter/Griffin
Johnson/Krejci
Okongwu/Fernando

Why for New Orleans:
Pelicans add a younger and more traditional point guard in Murray, they also add Capela who can serve as a stop-gap center in New Orleans with Valanciunas' contract expiring.

Murray/Alvarado
Murphy/Hawkins
Ingram/Daniels
Zion/Liddell
Capela/Nance

A simple trade that I feel better balances both rosters and fills some short-term gaps for them.

For the Pels, Herb is more valuable than DJM. I doubt Griff would trade Herb other than in a package for an all-nba player. A DPOY candidate who can now shoot the 3 locked up for 3 more years at $40M combined.

Capela and DJM replacing Herb/CJ compresses spacing too much and both Capela/DJM defenses have been pretty bad this year.

I have posted this version and other trades between these two teams before - because on paper really seems like a fit. Few problems…

Pels don’t see Murray as that much of an upgrade to part with Murphy or like in OP Herb or even Daniels. Pels would prefer either a picks package for Murray or trade for Trae (of course).

Hawks don’t want a picks package (unless they decide to rebuild).

But as OP says, a trade seems to have parts to balance both teams.

In my opinion they are good business partners... But the change is Murray/Griffin for Ingram... I have Ingram as more valuable, but the continued injuries and the status of the contract + Griffin are more than enough to close the gap...plus I think Murray fits better with Zion and clears the way for Murphy.

Hawks get star talent that should be a better fit...could continue with Capela +Kings FRP for M. Smart

Herb Jones with the contract he has, is the most valuable player of the bunch. He is untouchable uness its a trade for a superstar on long-term contract.
