Rockets/Hawks/Pistons

Hawks out: #1, De'Andre Hunter
Hawks in: Jabari Smith JR, #5

Why for Hawks: They want to win now and there are not a lot of win now guys in this draft. Smith JR is a lot closer to being able to contribute. They also save 10 mil and can still draft a prospect at 5.

Rockets out: #3, Jabari Smith Jr
Rockets in: #1

Why for the Rockets: they move up to grab Sarr who they see as an ideal fit next to Sengun. This trade also reduces the burden of having to pay 2 guys (Sengun, Green) and then 2 more guys (J Smith JR, Eason) after they just went on a spending spree last summer. Green or Eason could be subbed for Smith JR here depending on how the involved teams feel about these players. They also save some money.

Pistons out: #5
Pistons in: #3, De'Andre Hunter

Pistons move up from 3 to 5 and get De'Andre Hunter at the cost of some cap space

Jabari Smith would easily go #1 in this class.

Really poor value for the Rockets.

No, we are not doing that.

I've always found that a strange argument. Yes, he's as talented as anyone in this class but he's already used up two of his cheap rookie contract years. There's more that factors into trades than overall talent.

Talent is the 1st, 2nd and 3rd thing you should look at when evaluating a deal.

Ask the Warriors how much value they got out of Wiseman’s rookie contract years.

It’s a very bad draft.

I think the Rockets say no to a straight up Smith for #1 swap.

Yes.

Nope.

So do I but I also don't think you've convincingly made that argument.

1) Current talent
2) Future projected talent
3) Fit of the player’s talent on your current team

So I stand by my 1st, 2nd and 3rd statement

Anyway since we agree, how would you make the argument?

If that's the evaluation then maybe.

I don't agree with that evaluation. we know Smith can shoot, we think Saar might shoot, Saar is a better defender maybe, but Smith is definitely quite good there as well and is just a generally clearer fit.

As others noted, if Jabari was in this draft he might go ahead of Saar, not to mention we already have some proof of concept now with him, the only reason you do this for Houston would be to delay paying one guy.

If the evaluation is that Saar is way better than Jabari, the Hawks should just draft Saar.

I mean, I'd do it as the Pistons. :P I wouldn't be eager to give up anything of value to get Hunter, but getting paid to take Hunter? Sure.

OR the Rockets could just keep Smith and pick 3rd.
This is not a consensus #1 draft.

FVV's contract is only guaranteed for one more season. His contract is basically an expiring contract right now. It's a team option next summer. I don't think Houston will be paying him 44m in 2025-26, so they either restructure his contract to keep for cheaper or he leaves.
