Hawks

Trae / SAC 2025

for

Markkanen / Johnson / #10

SA

K Johnson / Jones / Graham / #4 / #8

for

Trae / SAC 2025

UTAH

Markkanen / #10

for

Jones / Graham / #4 / #8

ATL moves a ready to move Trae in a win now move
UTAH gets to go heavy in this draft
SA gives Wemby his #2 in the best passing PG in the NBA

I think that the trade needs a 4th team to take Johnson and get a bit more value to UTAH and SA.

I don't think Johnson has any real trade value though. Seems way too cheap for Trae....4/8/filler for Trae/Sac 1st. I think you can easily drop the Sac 1st and SA still needs to add some value, which more than likely is going to be the some of the Atlanta pick debt.

Utah---not a huge difference in 8 and 10 this year imo. So this is basically 4 for Markkanen, I have a tough time with his value if he is not extended. But it seems like a team that feels confident in him resigning would offer more than this. I think Utah would have to really love the guy at 4, don't know who that would be.

Lauri is expiring and then will get paid. Not good value for ATL.

In this scenario I'd rather cut Hawks out and get Markkanen to the Spurs.

I don't have any interest at all from a Jazz standpoint. I understand the conventional wisdom of players on expiring contracts having diminished value, but I just don't see Markannen get moved without an overwhelming offer. An impasse is not an unacceptable outcome here from my perspective.

And I have Trae valued far below Lauri.

So definitely fair to say let's keep him rather than take an offer impacted by his contract.
Don't understand exactly what you mean by impasse? Do you mean you are willing to risk him hitting UFA and just playing it out?
I definitely can't understand a way to value these two players that has Trae way lower. He's been a better player and he's locked up. Pretty much would have to be some sort of Trae sucks at defense narrative I guess?

Impasse meaning an unrealized trade.

I disagree with the idea that Trae has been a better player and I'm not saying this to lower his value so that my team can acquire him cheaper. I'll grant that he's a willing and effective distributor. He's horrid finishing at the rim, middling elsewhere, and whose TS% is propped up only by his foul baiting. And while Lauri isn't a stellar defender, Trae is one of the worst in the league and has been his entire career. His body type is the one where advantages diminish quickest with age and injury. I don't think he's remotely worth his contract and I wouldn't want him on my team period. I recognize that others may disagree.

I have Trae as better and more valuable than Lauri. But that’s been clearly shown as a minority vote here lately.

I think Atlanta passes here as Lauri is an expiring and the work (roster building and cap management) to potentially renegotiate him in January is pretty in depth I think?

I think Utah should do it. Or they should trade for Murray or Trae or someone.. Have to decide on something. Either road is good given their future asset base. Sitting, running it back and drafting 8th-12th in 2025 is not.

And SAS gets a good deal.

I completely understand this line of reasoning. There might be a deal for Lauri this summer, but I think it would be threading a very fine needle for it to happen. A contender who sees him as the final piece who has the assets (and the willingness to use them) that Utah would require. I still think that the most likely scenario is an R+E, which takes himself out of the trade market until next summer.

Yeah, but if I’m renegotiating and extending Lauri - which I would - I’m trading for talent. Not just waiting til 2025 to tank or do something.

I would renegotiate Lauri. And would add some talent, while keeping the 2029 picks off limits unless there’s an unlikely star involved.. could be overpaying Demar, could me Murray, could be any of the countless ideas tossed around..

If the plan is just to see how it goes, I’d just trade Lauri now, accepting I’m only getting 75% or so of his potential value in 12 months. Skipping the wasted year and getting the better 2025 pick make up for that value gap to me.

Agreed, SAS cuts out the Hawks if this is the price for Markkanen. Although they might try to play around with the picks a bit by offering one of several picks in 2025 rather than the 4...
