Dallas: solidly a two more year run

Post#1 » by vxmike » Mon May 27, 2024 7:14 am

Obviously Dallas is playing great right now. They have two elite scorers and a trio of big men who fit together nicely. Their entire rotation outside of DJJ is locked up on good contracts for two more years.

They can still trade their ‘25 FRP, ‘26 FRP swap, and ‘31 FRP. They have multiple tradable salaries in THJ, Kleiber, Green and Powell.

Does Dallas stand pat or get another wing player? I think ideally they could use one more starting quality wing or guard who can create offense and take some load off Luka and Kyrie in the regular season.

In two years they’ll face some difficult financial decisions as guys come due for new contracts and Luka’s PO arrives. Kyrie will be 34 then and closer to aging out, so they might want to really go all-in the next two seasons.

A successful offseason for Dallas looks like,

1. Open up enough money for DJJ to return, most likely trimming about 7-8 million for next year. (Dump THJ)

2. Use THJ as matching salary to upgrade.

3. Find reliable bench shooting, I actually think Cam Spencer or Antonio Reeves could be Dallas’s version of Aaron Wiggins.

So Mock Offseason:
Dallas trades: THJ, 25 1st top 8 protected, 25 Tor 2nd, 28 Miami 2nd
Dallas Receives: Alex Caruso

Dallas Drafts: Spencer or Reeves with #58

Resign DJJ for the MLE

2024-25 Mavs:
Luka(36)/ Kyrie(12)
Kyrie(24)/ Josh Green(20)/ Jaden Hardy/ Spencer or Reeves
DJJ(24)/ Casuso(24)/ Exum
PJ Washington(30)/ Maxi Kleber(18) / OMax
Lively(26)/ Gafford (22) / Powell

THJ/Powell are obviously very expendable...then we would have Maxi/Green/Exum as playable, but available for an upgrade...the rest, with the return of DJJ are all important...(Hardy/O-Max are cheap and little commercial value) some objectives that I think could be achievable and I think they would be improvements at different levels...Caruso/Tyus/Bogdan/J.Grant/Brogdon/DFS

Kyrie, Doncic, DJJ, PJ, Lively
Green, Kleber, Gafford

Retain DJJ is a must.

Trading THJ in to capspace enables Dallas to give DJJ the MLE. Harris at $20m was traded in to space for 2 SRPs, I'd expect 2 SRPs are enough for THJ in to space at $16m.

I think Detroit makes sense as a landing spot to absorb THJ. I could see them being in the market for a veteran shooter and they're probably going to have to overpay for guys in free agency. Might as well pick up an asset while they're at it.

Not sure which version I like better:

Straight salary dump:
THJ and '25 1st for a fake 2nd round pick

Dallas frees up enough breathing room to use both the full MLE to retain DJJ, as well as the BAE

Or

THJ, 25 1st, 2 future 2nds for Quentin Grimes

Again, they free up enough retain DJJ, but also get a decent 3+D guard on the last year of his rookie deal.
