Portland/Detroit: Simons+14 for 5

Post#1 » by mhd » Mon May 27, 2024 12:49 pm

Simple deal:

Portland ducks the tax while moving up in the draft and clearing up some of the logjam in the backcourt (which would be mitigated by taking at least one guard at 5 or 7).

Detroit (with boatloads of cap space) trades down to get a much needed young scorer who can shoot. They'll still have enough cap space to target anyone they like in FA.

As a Blazer fan I’m cool with it because we’re actually getting a solid return of value. Ant is worth more than a salary dump and this feels relatively good on our end. Maybe we push for a future pick or something on top, but even without we can do a lot with the 5 & 7 picks.
Somewhere trying not to offend Texas Chuck.

I know, Ivey has been underwhelming, but Detroit ends up with Cade, Sasser, Ivey, Simons and Grimes at the 1 and 2. Seems excessive.

Portland probably do this to get a chance at a prospect of their liking. 14 to 5 is a big jump even in this draft. If they can get Buzelis, Holland, or whatever their favorite prospect is, probably is worth it. Simons is decent but Portland is probably 2 or 3 years away from competing, so getting value for a player that might leave for free before that makes sense

I don't see why Detroit does this. I don't think Simons has that kind of value, he can score but he's one of the worst defensive players in the league. He needs to be on a team with great defenders around him to cover up for him.

Simons is a terrible fit in Detroit. I wouldn't want him for free. He is a better fit in Orlando for example.

I’d be happy to trade Duren plus something else for him but not our pick. Simons sucks defensively and creates as many issues that end of the court as what he solves on the offensive end.

I don't see this as making much sense for Detroit.
Why rely on nuance, facts and logic when you can bludgeon the other side with mindless repetition of "Duuur McDaniel's has potential :tooth and still be treated as if you were reasonable.
