Help Portland swap for a pick in the 20s

Post#1 » by Myth » Tue May 28, 2024 6:48 pm

So, essentially this is prompted by me really wanting Portland to draft DaRon Holmes II, but thinking #14 is too early to take him based on mocks, and hoping he falls to #34 is too risky. For some context, these are where a few common mocks have him: Tankathon (28), ESPN (50), NBADraft.net (20), Bleacher Report (30), CBS (28), The Ringer (23).

Objective: Either trade up from 34 and/or 40 to a pick in the 20s to get him, or trade down from 14 to get him plus receive something else of value. Blazers have 4 picks, so a swap is preferrable because we don't need to add 5 rookies, but it is possible to trade for a pick in the 20s without a swap and then Portland can worry about trading out of the draft with their other picks if necessary.

Other Portland pieces likely considered in such a trade that could hold value to certain teams:
Jerami Grant
Brogdon
Thybulle
Simons
Robert Williams

This is just me, but if you really believe in a guy, nothing wrong with just taking him "too high".

On this board you are going to have a hard time moving down and getting much value with how many people have convinced themselves this draft has no players and of course the natural tendency to believe tiers are flat up until when their team picks so no need to trade up and they fall off a cliff the pick after theirs so they want a premium for you to move up from the 2nd round.

But to play along, if you could safely drop and get your guy, I'd call Toronto with a Williams/14 for 19 deal. Clears the tax issue by moving an oft-injured backup and you still get your player. Toronto fans seem to want to take on salary for assets and this frees up a Poeltl or Olynyk trade.

You don't trade up in a draft until you know the player you want is there.

That's the whole purpose of your post, right? Like the Blazers would be trading up during the draft to draft Daron Holmes.

ORL sends: #18, DEN 25 frp, Jett Howard (appx $20m in salary savings)
POR sends: #14 and Simons

or,
ORL sends: #18, DEN 25 (appx $22.5m in savings)
POR sends: #14 and Brogdon

Yes, I agree any such trade would be on draft night and contingent that he is selected by the team we negotiated with. My response is more about that if he goes say 23, then the above trade is moot. So we may have to see who is willing to make a trade in the earlier 20s.

These seem to value Simons and Brogdon as similar, which Simons should have much more value than Brogdon, but that may be me having no interest in Jett at all.

First trade: The value feels way off here. I would be on board with trading Simons for #18 and Denver 25th, but not adding the 14th.

Second trade: Would Magic do Brogdon for Denver 25 straight up? If so, Portland might as well just take Holmes at 14 and then make a separate Brogdon to Orlando trade.

Any Knicks fans here? I'm curious if they would be interested in something based in #14 for #24 and #25? If so, I would then find a different team to propose 34 and 40 for a future 2nd round pick.

If he is there and the Jazz don't Iove anyone I think you could have our pick in the 20s for your 25 and 26 2nds.

14 to the Bucks for #23, #33 (Portland's own 2nd returned to them), 2031 2nd?

Portland's draft would then be #7, #23, #33, #34, #40

I imagine the goal is to consolidate the 34 and 40 into another late 1st, not water down the 14 to get even more picks. Portland had four rookies (five if you include Reath who was 28 years old) in Scoot, Murray, Rupert and Camara getting playing time. Adding three more rookies is barely feasible, five doesn't make sense.

This is where my mind went.
I think value wise, 14 = 24+25

Portland could probably swap #24+#40 for to the Suns for #22.

#22 - Holmes
#25 - Dadiet

The #29 pick is not high enough.

I think 34 and 40 can likely pull a pick in the mid 20's. I could see NYK moving the later of their back to back picks to take a few more swings and avoid a 2nd GTD contract.

A couple 2nds doesn’t jump up 23 to 14, especially when Portland already has more draft picks than roster spots as it is.

I imagine this requires at least a future 2nd to NyK as well.

Celtics likely would be in on #30 for #34 and #40 (or substitute a different future second).

I get the premise to go after one particular guy, but I think there are roster benefits to both teams with a deal of similar structure (value being in the eye of the beholder obviously).

NOP sends 17, 21 and Hawkins
Portland sends RW3 and 14

Feels a bit backwards but Blazers get 2 shots at players they like for a player coming back from an injury.
Pelicans get a center that -if healthy - can play the role. And at 14 could get Collier as a PG.

I like this one a lot for Portland.
