ATL/PHX/OKC - KD, Jalen Johnson, #1 pick

Overall Trade: (To avoid aggregation restrictions for Suns, this will be broken into two trades)

Hawks Out: Jalen Johnson, Murray, Capela, Hunter, #1
Hawks In: KD, Giddey, Kenrich Williams, #22, Worst OKC '27 pick

Okongwu/FA/#22
KD/Bey
Griffin/Giddey
Bogdan/Bufkin
Trae/Giddey

Hawks bring in KD and instantly become a Top 4 team in the East while also ducking the luxury tax. They stay very competitive over the next three years (while they don't own their pick) and rehab Trae's value if they want to rebuild once KD retires. Roster is offense-heavy, but solid at every position.

Suns Out: KD, Nas Little, #22
Suns In: Jalen Johnson, Murray, Capela, #12, Worst OKC '25 pick

Capela/Nurkic/#12
J. Johnson/O'Neal
Booker/O'Neal
Beal/G. Allen
Murray/Booker

The Big3 model no longer works with all the talent in the league. KD/Booker/Beal never made sense as a trio anyway because of the overlap in their offensive games. So the Suns ship out KD and get two solid starters and a potential rising star in Jalen Johnson. They also replenish a couple of their depleted picks to build for the long term and stay competitive through the years they don't have their picks.

OKC Out: Giddey, Kenrich Williams, #12, Worst '25 pick, Worst '27 Pick
OKC In: D. Hunter, Nas Little, #1

Chet/Sarr/JayWill
Sarr/JayDub/D. Hunter
JayDub/D. Hunter
SGA/Dort/Joe
C. Wallace/SGA

OKC takes on salary and trades a couple of picks to move to #1. Here, I assume Sarr, but it could easily be Clingan. They bulk their frontline and solidify their place as the best young team in the league. The Hunter and Little contracts can be used in a superstar trade

The two trades (players only for simplification -- picks can be moved in either trade):

Trade 1:

ATL Out: Capela, Murray, Hunter
ATL In: KD, Giddey

Suns Out: KD
Suns In: Capela, Murray

OKC Out: Giddey
OKC In: Hunter

Trade 2:

ATL Out: J. Johnson
ATL In: Kenrich Williams

Suns Out: Nas Little
Suns In: Jalen Johnson

OKC Out: Kenrich Williams
OKC In: Nas Little

OKC is stealing value here, they should be taken out. #1 + Johnson + filler for Durant doesn't feel very close in value for Durant, IMO. He's still a top-10 player.

I don't see Murray and Capela as filler. I think you could get at least a late 1st for Capela and a lottery-protected 1st for Murray.

So it's really KD for Jalen Johnson, 2 decent 1sts (12 this year, Lotto Protected = Murray), and 2 late 1sts (Capela + Worst OKC '25 pick).

Suns originally traded 4 1sts, 3 swaps, Bridges, and the right to overpay Cam Johnson. One 1st and one swap are already conveyed. Now, a year and a half later (with KD to turn 36 before the season after the Suns got swept in the 1st round) they get 4 1sts and Jalen Johnson.

Murray isn't filler but Capela definitely is. No one is giving a first for a below-average starting center making 22 million (and expiring). I'm not sure that Murray's value is super consequential to the core of this trade, though.

Giddey is a very bad fit in Atlanta, and he is part of the value they're getting. That's why this trade idea doesn't work. Replace Giddey for value Atlanta would actually want or remove Giddey and JJ and go from there.

Don’t think it would be wise for Atlanta to give up #1 for what could be 3 years max of KD.
Sarr or Risacher could be around for another 12 years. Probably won’t ever be half as good as KD but the time difference is huge.

Wait, what? Murray is worth significantly more than like a lotto protected first.

that resulting Hawks roster is as bad if not worse than the Suns are currently. Also echoing that OKC is stealing a ton of value here.

I mean the Suns were better than the Hawks to begin with so it would be an upgrade.

Hawks pass Jalen Johnson is staying a Hawk above all other players. You can work with Murray trae etc... To make a deal but Johnson is off the table he is who we need to build around.

Feels like it just replicates the KD Nets.

Horrific bad for Atlanta. Kicking them in the nuts multiple times is a better proposal

Sorry, but at some point these aging big name stars trade value needs to reflect what they are currently bringing to the table. Just because kd was worth this doesn’t mean he still is (insert butler / pg /etc)

I am a fan of Capela, but I agree with this, He might get 22 mill on a one year deal somewhere, but no one is going to pay for that privilege.

No it wouldn't. You have to account for the possibility that KD just mails it in going to what will be at best a .500 team and not a destination that he wants to go to. Never mind the potential upside of the #1 pick.

I’m not saying they should do the trade but KD makes them better next season. I don’t think that a very controversial view.
